Château Barrabaque: Fronsac & Canon Fronsac - Fronsac, Bordeaux

On the slopes above the Dordogne, a short drive from the celebrated vineyards of Pomerol and Saint-Émilion, a family estate has long been crafting the wines of Fronsac with quiet conviction. Two appellations, a generous clay-limestone terroir, and one unwavering priority: letting the fruit speak for itself.

Château Barrabaque, where Fronsac shows its most sincere face.

History and origins of the estate

Château Barrabaque was built on a conviction that time has not eroded: the finest bottles come from honest work, carefully tended vines and a cellar that knows how to wait. The estate occupies the hillsides of Fronsac, overlooking the Dordogne, a natural vantage point that Bordeaux winemakers know well, and that wine lovers are only now beginning to rediscover.

Tucked between the appellations of Fronsac and Canon Fronsac, in the immediate vicinity of Pomerol and Saint-Émilion, Barrabaque occupies a rare geographical position, in the shadow of great appellations that have long overshadowed its own considerable merits. A discreetness that shows in the wines themselves: generous without swagger, full-bodied without heaviness, sincere above all.

Fronsac & Canon Fronsac - the appellations to (re)discover

Neighbouring Pomerol and Saint-Émilion, the Fronsac and Canon Fronsac appellations produce wines of real character from clay-limestone hillsides above the Dordogne. Often overlooked, they offer some of the finest quality-to-pleasure ratios in all of Bordeaux.

The terroir and its unique character

The Château Barrabaque vineyard extends across 10 hectares of south-facing hillsides above the Dordogne. This privileged exposure, combined with predominantly clay-limestone soils, creates ideal conditions for slow, thorough ripening, the key to natural tannic maturity and genuine aromatic richness.

What makes Barrabaque singular is its dual belonging: the estate straddles both the Fronsac and Canon Fronsac appellations. Canon Fronsac, regarded as the finer of the two, yields a more concentrated and complex expression from its clay-limestone hillsides. Two complementary terroirs, one shared philosophy of farming.

Working the vines and our commitments

At Barrabaque, sustainable farming is not a slogan, it is the outcome of daily, attentive work focused on the health of the soil, the plant and the people who tend it. Each plot is farmed according to its own specific characteristics: aspect, soil type, vine age. There is no uniform recipe applied to a vineyard that is anything but uniform.

Harvests on the hillsides are carried out by hand, the terrain demands it, and the quality deserves it. Grapes are carefully sorted before entering the winery, where temperature-controlled vats ensure a managed fermentation that preserves the full aromatic integrity of the fruit. Tradition and technology coexist here naturally, each in service of the other.

Ageing in French oak barrels sits at the heart of the Barrabaque style. Chosen for its fine, elegant tannins, French oak accompanies the wine without overpowering it, it structures, refines, and above all protects what the estate calls its absolute priority: the fruit. From the 2018 vintage onwards, the reds are sealed with DIAM closures, guaranteed cork-taint free and produced by a French company committed to environmental responsibility. Whites and rosés are bottled with reusable glass stoppers.

Grape varieties and appellations

The red wines of Barrabaque draw on the four historic varieties of Fronsac: Merlot, full-bodied and generous, the backbone of every blend; Cabernet Franc, for elegance and aromatic finesse; Cabernet Sauvignon, for structure and ageing potential; and Malbec, discreet but precious, which in the cuvées dedicated to it alone delivers deep spiced notes and dark fruit of remarkable intensity.

For the white wines, Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon bring freshness, roundness and complexity, a classic Bordeaux pairing, handled here with particular attention to liveliness and the floral, fruity expression of both varieties.

The wine style and the cuvées

The wines of Barrabaque carry a recognisable signature: fruity and full-bodied, with silky tannins that invite you to the table rather than to the cellar. The estate recommends decanting or using a carafe to open up the aromas fully before serving. Nine cuvées make up a coherent range, from easy-drinking aperitif wine to serious reds built for the long term.

Château Barrabaque Tradition - Fronsac

Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon · 15 months in French oak · Best: 3 to 10 years

The estate's signature red. Fruity and structured, with a generous tannic backbone that softens progressively with time. A characterful Fronsac - decant and serve alongside red meat, roast lamb or a well-aged cheese.

Château Barrabaque Prestige - Canon Fronsac

Merlot-dominant · 18 months in barrel, 30% new oak · Best: 4 to 12 years

The prestige cuvée. Complex and subtle, with a long, silky finish that the patient ageing in new oak barrels builds with care. For the finest occasions, roast duck, Périgord truffle dishes or a great aged cheese.

Cuvée Hugo - Fronsac

Merlot · Fruit-forward · Crunchy

The everyday Fronsac, uncomplicated and vivid. Bright fruit, a crunchy texture, immediate pleasure. The bottle you reach for without a second thought: grilled meats, barbecues, a relaxed family dinner.

Barrabaque Divin - Fronsac

100% Malbec · Aged in new oak barrels · Spiced notes and dark fruit

A Bordeaux curiosity. Pure Malbec on Fronsac's clay-limestone soils, deep, spiced, with dark ripe fruit aromas of remarkable intensity and persistence. An exceptional wine for those who seek character above all.

Barrabaque Merlot 100%

100% Merlot · Fruity · Easy-drinking

Merlot in its most direct expression, supple, fruity, with no sharp edges. The ideal companion for an aperitif, a picnic or any occasion that calls for lightness and good cheer.

Caprice de Caroline - Bordeaux White

Sauvignon Blanc & Sémillon · Vinified and aged on lees in barrel

The estate's character white. Lees ageing in barrel gives it wonderful vibrancy, a creamy texture and an aromatic complexity that surprises. Fruity, fresh and elegant, serve with seafood, fish in sauce or a well-aged goat's cheese.

Barrabaque Gourmandise - Bordeaux White

Sauvignon Blanc & Sémillon · Young vines · Dry and fruity

The entry-level white, direct and refreshing. White fruit and citrus on the nose, a lively, light palate. Perfect as an aperitif, with salads or a platter of shellfish on the terrace.

Barrabaque Rosé

Drink within 2 years · Freshness and aromatic richness

The pleasure rosé, light, aromatic, with a natural freshness that belongs outdoors. Open young to enjoy the full burst of fruit.

Élégance de Barrabaque - Food rosé

Fuller-bodied · Fruity · Made for the table

A rosé designed with food in mind, more structured than its sibling, with generous fruit and enough body to hold its own at the table. Try it with grilled meats, pasta dishes, risotto or subtly spiced cuisine.

What you will only find at Barrabaque

Malbec in Fronsac. Rare in this appellation, the Malbec grown at Barrabaque gives birth to the Divin cuvée, pure varietal, aged in new barrels, with spiced notes and dark fruit of remarkable intensity. A Bordeaux curiosity that stands apart from everything else the region produces.

A dual appellation across 10 hectares. Fronsac and Canon Fronsac coexist within a single estate, allowing Barrabaque to offer a range of unusual breadth, from aperitif wine to serious long-ageing reds, without ever leaving its home terroir.

Closures chosen for the wine. Reds are sealed with DIAM stoppers from the 2018 vintage, a French innovation, guaranteed free of cork taint. Whites and rosés use reusable glass closures. Technical choices that show attention to every last detail before the wine reaches your glass.

French oak as a philosophy. Ageing in French oak barrels, with their fine, elegant tannins, is a deliberate choice. At Barrabaque, the wood serves the fruit. Never the other way around.
