Gigondas Wines: A Gem of the Southern Rhône
The wines of Gigondas share the limelight of the Southern Rhône with their famous neighbors: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, located less than 30 minutes from the village of Gigondas. Their geographic location and sunny climate make Gigondas a flagship appellation in the Rhône Valley and in France.
What is the Gigondas AOC?
The Gigondas AOC covers just over 1,200 hectares of vineyards, planted in an amphitheater at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail. This location offers an exceptional view, optimal sunshine, the coolness of a slight altitude (150 to 400 meters), and natural air circulation thanks to the Mistral wind.
However, these lands are capricious due to their soil, resulting in low yields. This characteristic drives winemakers to craft robust and structured red wines with significant aging potential.
What Grape Varieties are Allowed in the Gigondas Appellation?
The grape varieties that thrive in the Gigondas appellation are representative of the Rhône terroir. They include Cinsault, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah.
The king grape of the AOC Gigondas is Grenache Noir, making up at least 50% of the blends. Its two most frequently associated partners are Mourvèdre and Syrah (the famous GSM blend that has earned the Southern Rhône its worldwide reputation).
What Are the Aromas of AOC Gigondas Wines?
Dominated by Grenache, Gigondas wines present aromas of jammy red fruits, stone fruits, and even kirsch. These aromas are complemented by notes of roasting, spices, licorice, and candied fruits, often from Syrah and Mourvèdre.
As they age, these wines become more rugged and develop notes of leather and game.
Note: Rosé wines are also produced in the region, with aromas of cooked fruits and roasted almonds.
What Foods Pair Well with AOC Gigondas Wines?
This aromatic profile, combined with a powerful tannic structure, makes AOC Gigondas wines well-suited for pairing with winter dishes, particularly meat-based ones. Young Gigondas wines are ideal with beef stew or meat in sauce. More mature wines perfectly complement game and duck. For simpler pairings, these wines also go well with charcuterie and grilled meats. For these last two choices, a rosé from AOC Gigondas can also work wonderfully!
