Portraits of winemakers
Domaine Sergent, Madiran: four generations of women winemakers facing the Pyrenees
Domaine Sergent is a 23-hectare family estate in Maumusson-Laguian, in the Gers, at the meeting point of the Pyrenees and the Landes. Bought by the great-grandfather in 1902, the estate is now run by Brigitte and Corinne, the fourth generation of the family, who produce their Madiran and Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh. Their wines are available direct from the producer on Avenue des Vins.

How would you describe Domaine Sergent?
A family estate in the Gers, facing the Pyrenees
Some estates are best told through their landscape. Maumusson-Laguian, in the Gers, at the meeting point of the Pyrenees and the Landes: it is there, facing the Pyrenean range, that the 23 hectares of Domaine Sergent's vines stretch out.
The story begins in 1902, when the great-grandfather bought the property. Since then, the estate has been handed down from generation to generation. Since 1995, it has been in the hands of Brigitte and Corinne, the fourth generation of the family, a female line of succession that speaks volumes about their attachment to this land.
In 1902, our great-grandfather bought the estate, which has been handed down from generation to generation ever since.
When did wine get into your blood?
A childhood pull, and experiences on the other side of the world
For Brigitte and Corinne, the desire came early. As children, they were already drawn to the life of the estate, to a daily rhythm shaped by the vines and the seasons.
As children, we were already drawn to the life of the estate.
Corinne took her curiosity further. After studying viticulture and oenology, she went on to gain experience in the vineyards of New Zealand and Australia, before returning to bring that outside perspective back to the estate.
What philosophy guides your work in the vineyard and the cellar?
Observe, listen, adapt, and pass on the passion
The estate's philosophy comes down to a few simple words: observe, listen to the environment, and adapt. Work as naturally as possible, with a minimum of inputs, to let the character of each vintage express itself freely.
Let the character of each vintage express itself, then analyse the results of our work to keep improving it.
The goal: wines that are easy-drinking, balanced, and made with a passion that never fades. Because at heart, everything here is about transmission, both the craft and the love of the work, passed from one generation to the next.
What memory at the estate has stayed with you most?
The November open days, a weekend of music and sharing
Every year, on the third weekend of November, the open days are a highlight. Conversation, song, tasting and warmth: those few days capture everything the estate stands for.
Conversation, song, tasting and warmth, those are the watchwords of that weekend.
One memory stands out: an evening of bandas music and tapas organised by Nathan, the fifth generation, where three generations of the estate came together to celebrate the Madiran and the Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh. One of their finest memories.
Which wine best represents Domaine Sergent?
VINO2, a 100% Tannat Madiran that breaks the mould
If one wine had to represent the estate, it would be VINO2: a 100% Tannat Madiran carrying the Bleu Tannat label. A fruit-forward, generous Madiran that pushes back against the preconceptions surrounding the appellation.
Best enjoyed lightly chilled, as an aperitif, with charcuterie boards or grilled meats. This is a wine for friends above all, one that calls for good company.
A Madiran that breaks the mould!
Tannat, the king grape of Madiran, is here worked to reveal its generosity rather than its power, another way of introducing the South-West of France.
What are your ambitions for the years ahead?
The arrival of the fifth generation, a breath of fresh air
What gets Brigitte and Corinne up every morning? Their surroundings, and the beauty of a landscape they never tire of: the view of the Pyrenees, the valleys planted with vines and woodland, the cereal fields stretching out below.
Looking ahead, they have the good fortune of seeing Nathan, the fifth generation, join the estate. Farming instincts in his blood and fresh ideas to match, he brings a real breath of fresh air. An estate that stays true to the words that sum it up best: warm and welcoming.
Why buy directly from the winemaker? The wines of Domaine Sergent are shipped straight from the estate: estate price with no middleman, full vintage traceability, and your support for an independent winegrowing family.
