Domaine Sergent - character-driven Madiran and exceptional Pacherenc, shaped by two women in the heart of the Gers since 1902
Where the Béarn, Bigorre and Gascony meet, on the sun-drenched hillsides of the Gers, Domaine Sergent makes wines that carry the accent of their place and the signature of the women behind them. On the slopes of Maumusson, facing due south, 23 hectares of certified organic vines tell a family story that stretches back to 1902, and which, for the past thirty years, has been carried forward by two determined women who inherited both the land and its ambitions.
Brigitte and Corinne Dousseau don't make wine the way you follow a recipe. They craft it the way you raise something precious, with patience, precision and the kind of sensitivity that makes all the difference in a well-made glass of Tannat.
Four generations, one unbroken thread
It begins in 1902, when the family first planted vines on the clay-limestone soils of Madiran. For nearly a century, the estate took shape quietly, parcel by parcel, vintage by vintage. Gilbert Dousseau eventually led the domaine, impressing on it a rigour and a vision that would define its wines for decades: Madirans of depth and integrity, firmly rooted in their terroir.
In 1995, his daughters Brigitte and Corinne took over. In a South-West wine region where character-driven reds had long been seen as a man's domain, they proved decisively otherwise. Their approach, attentive, exacting, deeply felt, brought a new finesse to the estate's wines without ever betraying the natural power of the Tannat. It is their hands that prune the vines each winter, their eyes that judge when the harvest is ready around 20th September, their palates that guide every blend.
The estate philosophy
"We do not own the land, we work it, learn from it, and pass it on. We owe it our care.", Brigitte & Corinne Dousseau

Two terroirs, one hillside, radically different wines
Domaine Sergent draws on two distinctly different soil types, each with its own personality and each contributing something essential to the range as a whole. At Saint-Lanne, the vines grow in stony clay soils on high hillsides swept by South-West winds. The result is Madiran that is intense and round, with ample tannins, wines that open up with time and reveal unexpected depth.
At Maumusson itself, the soil shifts entirely: this is grepp country, a clay-limestone mix uniquely characteristic of the Madiran appellation. This is where the estate's most concentrated wines are born, with generous tannins and the deep, distinctive identity of the appellation at its most authentic. The due-south exposure ensures optimal ripeness for Tannat, a demanding grape that only gives its best under precise conditions.
Saint-Lanne - High hillsides · Stony clay soils · Intense, round wines with ample tannins
Maumusson - Grepp soils · Most characteristic of the appellation · Concentrated, generous tannins
Due-south exposure - Optimal Tannat ripeness · Maximum aromatic concentration
35-year-old vines - Deep root systems · Naturally low yields · Increased complexity
Caring for the living, from vine to bottle
The organic certification at Domaine Sergent is not a commercial argument, it is the logical endpoint of a philosophy passed down through generations. Brigitte and Corinne say it plainly: the land is not theirs to own. They work it, learn from it, and will return it in better shape than they found it.
In practice: vines trained in semi-high systems, pruned using the simple Guyot method, with careful shoot-thinning to spread the bunches and limit yields naturally. No shortcuts, no forcing. Harvest begins around 20th September, when the berries have reached their ideal maturity, not before.
Certified organic farming
No synthetic inputs, living soils preserved, biodiversity protected across the Gers hillsides. The organic certification rewards a conviction that long predates any trend, it is inherited, practised daily and passed on.
Guyot pruning and shoot-thinning
The semi-high training system and simple Guyot pruning allow optimal airflow and even sun exposure across the canopy. Shoot-thinning reduces yields and concentrates the vine's energy into a smaller number of exceptional bunches.
Harvesting at peak maturity
Tannat does not forgive impatience. Brigitte and Corinne wait for the right moment, generally around 20th September, to ensure tannins are fully ripe and aromas have reached their peak. This respect for time is what separates a great Madiran from an ordinary one.
The wines of Domaine Sergent: from Tannat to Gascony
The range at Domaine Sergent covers the full spectrum of South-West France, from structured Madiran reds built for the cellar to richly aromatic Pacherenc sweet wines, alongside more approachable Côtes de Gascogne cuvées. Every wine carries the imprint of a specific terroir and the two women who shaped it.
Madiran Les Cèdres
Madiran AOP · Tannat · Character red
One of the estate's benchmark cuvées, from the stony clay parcels of Saint-Lanne. Tannat here gives an intense, rounded expression with broad tannins, dark fruit aromas and a long, spice-tinged finish. The kind of bottle that rewards patience, or a slow-cooked confit de canard.
Madiran Les Noyers
Madiran AOP · Tannat · Grepp soils · Concentrated and structured
From the grepp parcels of Maumusson, the most distinctive soils of the appellation, Les Noyers embodies Tannat at its most powerful and focused. Dense, generous tannins that soften beautifully with aeration, revealing layers of aromatic complexity. Decant for at least an hour, or lay it down for a few years.
Madiran Eucalyptus
Madiran AOP · Tannat · Prestige cuvée
The estate's flagship, and its most surprising. Eucalyptus stands out for its elegance: the cool, mentholated note that gives it its name lifts an impressive tannic structure without overwhelming it. Power and finesse in genuine equilibrium. Made for great tables and memorable occasions.
Madiran VIN02
Madiran AOP · Tannat · Contemporary cuvée
A more contemporary reading of Madiran, generous fruit, velvety texture, tannins that are present but approachable from opening. The ideal introduction to the appellation for those taking their first steps into Tannat territory.
OHVNI - Blanc de Noir
Vin de France · Dry white · Bold winemaking
The estate's UFO, and it wears the name proudly. A white wine vinified from black grapes: a pale robe, a taut palate, an unexpected minerality. The bottle to order blind when you want to start a conversation at the table.
Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh Sec
Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh AOP · Petit Manseng, Gros Manseng · Dry aromatic white
The white counterpart to the estate's powerful reds. White flowers, citrus, faint tropical notes, a fresh, persistent palate with real aromatic intensity. Excellent as an aperitif alongside foie gras, or paired with fish in cream sauce.
Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh Doux & Les Grains d'Élise
Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh AOP · Late harvest · Exceptional sweet wine
Pacherenc moelleux is one of South-West France's most underrated treasures. Late-harvested Petit Manseng develops honey, candied apricot and exotic fruit aromas, held in balance by a natural acidity that keeps the sweetness fresh rather than cloying. Les Grains d'Élise is the most confidential cuvée of the range, a small-production rarity well worth seeking out.
Oh Chic Rosé & Blanc Moelleux - Les Vignes de Chloé Rouge
Côtes de Gascogne IGP · Approachable, everyday cuvées
The lighter side of Domaine Sergent, easy-drinking, generous and immediately enjoyable. Oh Chic Rosé for summer aperitifs, Oh Chic Blanc Moelleux for fruit-based desserts, Les Vignes de Chloé Rouge for those discovering South-West France in a softer register. Wines made for pleasure, no ceremony required.

Why choose Domaine Sergent wines ?
A family estate built over the long haul. 1902 to today, that is not a marketing claim, it is something you can taste. Four generations have shaped these parcels, these grapes, this balance. Nobody becomes a custodian of Tannat overnight.
Madiran: an appellation worth discovering. Long overshadowed by its Bordeaux neighbours, Madiran produces some of France's most singular reds, carried by Tannat, a grape variety virtually unique to this corner of the South-West. Domaine Sergent is one of its most honest addresses.
Organic farming as a way of life, not a label. The certification reflects a deep-held vision of what farming should be, not a trend to follow. The soils are alive, the vines are healthy, the wines show it directly.
Buying direct means buying right. Ordering through Avenue des Vins gives you access to Brigitte and Corinne's wines as close to the source as possible, without unnecessary distribution margins, with careful delivery and a specialist guarantee on every bottle.
A corner of Gascony worth the journey
Domaine Sergent sits in one of those pockets of South-West France that most travellers pass through without stopping. That is their loss. The Gers, at the meeting point of Béarn, Bigorre and Gascony, is unhurried, unassuming and quietly extraordinary, the kind of place where the food is good, the light is warm and the wine tastes of somewhere specific.
The estate offers accommodation for those who want to wake up among the vines, watch the harvest begin and understand from the inside what organic farming on a grepp terroir actually looks like. For those who cannot make the journey, or who simply want to start with the wines, Avenue des Vins brings the Domaine Sergent experience directly to your table.
Frequently asked questions about Domaine Sergent
Where is Domaine Sergent located ?
Domaine Sergent is based in Maumusson, in the Gers département of South-West France, at the meeting point of Béarn, Bigorre and Gascony. The estate sits within the Madiran, Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh and Côtes de Gascogne appellations, on a hillside facing due south, one of the most prized exposures in the Madiran wine region.
What is Tannat, the grape behind Madiran ?
Tannat is a red grape variety native to the Pyrenean foothills of South-West France, almost exclusively associated with the Madiran appellation. It produces dark-coloured wines with powerful tannins and a firm structure. When properly raised, it develops aromas of dark berries, spice and sometimes fresh herb notes. It is a variety built for ageing, softening beautifully with time in bottle, or in a good decanter.
Are Domaine Sergent wines certified organic ?
Yes. All 23 hectares of Domaine Sergent are farmed under certified organic practices. This certification reflects Brigitte and Corinne Dousseau's long-standing commitment to soil health and biodiversity across their parcels at Maumusson and Saint-Lanne, a commitment that predates current trends by several decades.
What food pairings work with Domaine Sergent Madiran ?
Madiran wines are made for the table. Les Cèdres and Les Noyers pair beautifully with grilled red meats, South-West confit, and aged pressed cheeses. Eucalyptus, with its additional complexity, is well suited to celebratory dishes: rack of lamb, magret de canard with ceps, strongly flavoured mature cheeses. All benefit from at least an hour in a decanter before serving.
What is Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh ?
Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh is a white wine appellation from South-West France, produced over the same geographical area as Madiran. Made primarily from Petit Manseng and Gros Manseng, it comes in two styles: dry (aromatic and fresh) and sweet or moelleux (rich, honeyed, with candied fruit notes). It is one of France's great undiscovered white wine appellations, and Domaine Sergent's versions are among its finest expressions.
Can I order Domaine Sergent wines directly without a traditional retailer ?
Avenue des Vins gives you direct access to Brigitte and Corinne Dousseau's cuvées, bypassing conventional distribution entirely. Short supply chain, careful packaging designed for wine transport, and delivery across France and Europe, with the assurance of an authentic organic family estate wine with every order.
What is the difference between Les Cèdres, Les Noyers and Eucalyptus ?
All three are 100% Tannat Madiran, but each reflects a different parcel and a different ambition. Les Cèdres (Saint-Lanne) delivers an intense, rounded expression that is approachable relatively young. Les Noyers (Maumusson, grepp soils) is denser and more structured, a wine to cellar. Eucalyptus is the estate's prestige cuvée: more complex, more polished, reserved for special occasions. All three deserve to be explored.
What is grepp, and why does it matter for Madiran ?
Grepp is a clay-limestone soil type specific to the Madiran appellation, found primarily around Maumusson. It is considered the most characteristic and prestigious terroir in the region: dense, structured, with excellent water retention that supports the vine through dry summers. Wines from grepp parcels tend to be more concentrated, more complex and more age-worthy, which is why Les Noyers, grown on this soil, is one of Domaine Sergent's most sought-after cuvées.
