How would you describe Domaine Bleger?
An organic family estate in Orschwiller, at the heart of the Alsace Wine Route
Some addresses say more about an estate than any introduction could. Orschwiller, at the foot of Haut-Koenigsbourg castle, at the centre of the Alsace Wine Route. That is where Domaine Bleger has its roots, its plots and its story.
Nine and a half hectares. Thirty-five plots. Four villages. This fragmentation, typical of the Alsace wine region, is not a constraint for Christophe Bleger: it is a richness. Each plot brings its own expression, its own minerality, its own way of telling the Alsatian terroir. And all of it feeds into a complete range that reflects what makes Alsace unique: the only region in France to produce, under a single appellation, dry whites, late harvest wines, sparkling wines and reds.
Honest wines, made for pleasure.
When did you catch the wine bug?
Born into the vines: a passion that cannot be explained, only lived
Some winemakers can pinpoint the exact moment everything changed, a revelatory tasting, an unforgettable vintage. Christophe Bleger has no such memory. Not for lack of it, but because there was never a turning point. The vine was there before him. He was born into it.
I didn't catch the wine bug, I was born with it. Growing up at the heart of the family estate, between the vines and the cellar, this passion imposed itself naturally.
Growing up at the heart of an estate means learning by watching before learning by doing. It means understanding that behind every bottle lies a full cycle, a year of work, decisions made in rain or sunshine, choices in the cellar that commit you for months ahead. And it means developing, almost without noticing, that permanent curiosity about what separates an ordinary wine from one you never forget.
What philosophy guides your work in the vineyard and the cellar?
Organics as a compass, honesty as a standard
The philosophy of Domaine Bleger comes down to a few words, but those words carry a great deal of weight. Making honest wines, true to their terroir, above all made for pleasure. In the vineyards of Orschwiller and across the estate's other plots, this translates into organic farming conducted with observation and precision, not to dominate nature, but to understand it.
In the vineyards, we work organically, seeking to accompany nature rather than constrain it, with a great deal of observation and precision. In the cellar, the idea is the same: intervene as little as possible, to let the grape express itself.
In the cellar, the same logic applies: minimal intervention, maximum precision in what remains necessary. Wines that are balanced, easy to drink, that draw you back, and above all, that are made for sharing. This commitment to honesty, the word comes naturally to Christophe, is also what drives him to seek out what is unique in each plot, rather than pulling everything towards a uniform style.
What memory has marked you most at the estate?
The silent lesson of his parents: passion, rigour and respect for wine
One might expect an exceptional vintage, a harvest remembered under the first Alsatian morning mists. The memory that has marked Christophe Bleger most is simpler, and deeper. It is his parents at work, in the vineyards and in the cellar: their energy, their exacting standards, their deep respect for wine.
I always saw them put enormous passion and energy into what they did, with real rigour and a great deal of respect for wine. That is something that marked me deeply, and still guides the way I work today.
That kind of transmission cannot be taught, it is absorbed. And it is precisely this vision of the craft, built on quiet rigour and a visceral respect for the raw material, that you find in every bottle from the estate.
Which wine best represents Domaine Bleger?
The Riesling Inoubliable: dry, precise, true to its name
Christophe Bleger is straightforward about it: every cuvée tells part of the estate's story. But if one wine had to be chosen, the answer comes without hesitation, the Riesling Inoubliable.
A dry, precise, well-balanced Alsace Riesling, carried by the taut freshness that defines the great Rieslings of the region. A straight, unadorned wine that reflects exactly what the estate sets out to do: reveal the terroir without masking it. And a wine that keeps its promise, you open it, and you do not forget it.
It is also a wine that lives up to its name: you open it… and you don't forget it.
The Riesling Inoubliable finds its perfect moment as an aperitif among friends, opening the palate before sitting down to eat. But it also pairs with great precision alongside pike-perch in a beurre blanc sauce, where its freshness balances the richness of the sauce and brings the dish into focus.
What are your ambitions for the years ahead?
Evolving the estate without losing what makes it authentic
Christophe Bleger's ambition is consistent with what he has built: to keep the estate moving forward without betraying its identity. Wines that are ever more precise, ever more honest, ever more in tune with the terroir of Orschwiller and the surrounding villages. And to continue the work committed to organic farming, not as a label, but as a deep conviction.
Growing a family legacy also means knowing what is worth preserving. That may be the most accurate definition of the word he chooses to describe his estate: sincère, honest.
