Portraits of winemakers
Château Castigno: a trip to Languedoc if you stroll around the village
If you find yourself wandering around the village of Assignan, in the south of the AOC Saint-Chinian region, you might come across a truly unique structure. Shaped like a wine bottle and covered in cork bark, this is the Château Castigno cellar.
Available directly from the estate on Avenue des Vins.
What exactly is Château Castigno?
A unique destination in Languedoc
Dubbed the “most original cellar in France” by Midi Libre and the “Cathedral of Wine” by Le Figaro, it is just the visible part of the Castigno village. Castigno encompasses 35 hectares of organically farmed vineyards in the southern part of the Saint-Chinian appellation in Languedoc. It also includes three restaurants, one of which holds a Michelin star, and a hotel with twenty-four rooms dedicated to wine tourism. Château Castigno invites you to explore Languedoc through its wines and the experiences offered at the heart of the vineyard.
How has the estate been recognised for its welcome?
Bronze medal in the wine tourism awards
In 2019, Château Castigno was awarded the bronze medal in the “Restaurant in the Vineyard” category by Atout France and Terre de Vins for its exceptional hospitality. The estate’s passion for terroir, taste, and well-crafted dishes is reflected in its three restaurants: La Table Castigno, a Michelin-starred establishment featuring a local and seasonal menu; Le Thaï de Castigno, which offers a taste of Asia with local ingredients; and La Petite Table, a grill and bistro set in the heart of the vines. This love for fine dining and hospitality is the core of their philosophy. The entire village is dedicated to happiness and sharing, offering an array of experiences including hotel stays, wedding receptions, massages and treatments with organic vine leaves, vineyard tours, and wine education. Castigno village is a timeless place where the vineyard sets the pace.
How is the vineyard farmed and which grapes are grown?
High-quality organic wines
One of the iconic images of the estate is the sight of magnificent horses plowing the vines. The 32 hectares of vineyards are cultivated organically, honoring the unique terroir of Languedoc. Harvesting is done by hand, underscoring the commitment to connecting the terroir with people.
For white wines, the estate cultivates Grenache Blanc, Clairette, and Roussanne. These varieties produce fruity and flavorful wines with rich, creamy finishes. For red wines, Mourvèdre, Grenache Noir, Carignan, and Syrah are used. These wines, typical of the sun-drenched terroir, offer deep notes of black fruits, spices, and licorice with marked, silky tannins.
Which cuvée should you try first?
Our recommendation
We highly recommend trying the “Secret des Dieux” cuvée, which we’ve tasted for you.
Why buy directly from the winemaker? The wines of Château Castigno are shipped straight from the estate: estate price with no middleman, full vintage traceability, and your support for an independent winegrowing family.
Discover the wines of Château Castigno directly from the estate, at the estate price, in a short supply chain on Avenue des Vins.
Frequently asked questions about Château Castigno
Where is Château Castigno located?
The estate sits near the village of Assignan, in the southern part of the Saint-Chinian appellation in Languedoc. Its striking winery, built to resemble a bottle and clad in cork, marks the entrance to the wine village.
Which grape varieties does Château Castigno grow?
