Portraits of winemakers
Champagne Boutillez Vignon
Champagne Boutillez Vignon is rooted in a long-standing family history tied to the village of Villers-Marmery, at the heart of the Montagne de Reims. Records of the Boutillez family in local viticulture date back to the 16th century, and several generations followed one another before Gérard Boutillez founded his estate in 1964. With Colette, who also came from a family of winegrowers, he then launched his own brand, whose first bottles were produced in 1974. This family continuity remains at the heart of the house’s identity, nourished by the paternal heritage and by the essential role women have always played in its history.
Available directly from the estate on Avenue des Vins.
What is the story behind the estate?
A family history
We imagine our grandparents and our father proud of our journey,
sums up the new generation of women winegrowers.
Since 2010, Armelle, Laurence and Marie-Josée have taken up their parents’ torch and together keep this Champagne house alive. Armelle works in the cellar, Laurence in the vineyard, and Marie-Josée in production as well as packaging. This complementarity is one of the estate’s strengths, with each sister bringing her own specialty while pursuing a shared vision. In 2024, a new chapter opened with the assertion of a renewed identity, embodied by their signature “Creative sister’s trio,” which reflects the spirit of sisterhood and creativity that drives their work.
Complementary, independent and specialists,
the three sisters lay claim to this harmony.
How do the sisters work in the vineyard and cellar?
Committed viticulture
The estate’s recent history extends the choices already made by their parents, who had adopted sustainable viticulture very early on. When they took over, the three sisters wanted to go further by formalizing their environmental commitment through HVE certification and the implementation of zero herbicide use on the plots. This desire to preserve the vineyard sustainably is part of a broader reflection on transmission, quality and respect for the terroir. In the cellar, they have confirmed certain winemaking directions while developing their own vision of Champagne, notably by increasing the share of barrel aging.
The vine and wine are like music; we replay the score each year when it comes to blending.
Among the projects that are particularly close to their hearts, the development of ephemeral vinifications holds an important place, notably with the cuvée Libre Jeu. The 1921 project also reflects a strong ambition: to preserve the estate’s oldest parcel through a massal selection carried out on site, in order to safeguard its identity over the long term. This work naturally connects past, present and future.
To be known and recognized in France and abroad
is also one of the goals pursued by the trio.
What kind of Champagnes does the house make?
Characterful Champagnes driven by precision
At Boutillez Vignon, wine is first and foremost a matter of transmission and passion. The passion came from the very first harvests, in contact with the grapes arriving at the press after a year of work in the vines. Their father, deeply committed to his profession, naturally served as a model. Their viticultural studies then confirmed this choice. Today, this vision continues in the way they approach each vintage, as a new interpretation of a shared score between climate, terroir and human sensitivity.
Each year, we have different Champagnes resulting from the influences of the climate, the terroir and our interpretation,
they explain.
Among the estate’s most striking memories, Armelle recalls the moment when her father entrusted her on her own with the tirage, just after she obtained her national diploma in oenology. This gesture of trust marked an important step in the transmission of the family know-how. As for the wine that resembles her most, she cites Ostinato, a cuvée she describes as “mature and thoughtful, full of restraint.” A definition that also sheds light on the style sought by Champagne Boutillez Vignon: precise, consistent and nuanced Champagnes, reflecting the terroir of Villers-Marmery.
Why buy directly from the winemaker? The wines of Champagne Boutillez Vignon are shipped straight from the estate: estate price with no middleman, full vintage traceability, and your support for an independent winegrowing family.
