Grenache, a great family of grapes from the South

Grenache is one of the most widely planted grapes in the world and a signature of the vineyards of the South. Born in Spain, where it is known as Garnacha, it comes in three colors: black, white, and gray. This page gives you the key points about this family, then guides you toward each type.

Grenache at a glance

Color: family of grapes, in black, white and gray
Origin: Spain (garnacha)
Regions: Southern Rhône (Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas), Roussillon (Maury, Banyuls, Rivesaltes), Provence, Spain
Profile: supple, generous, sun-filled reds; round, ample whites; pale gris; rosés; vins doux naturels
Serving temperature: around 16 °C (red), 8 to 10 °C (white/rosé), 12 to 14 °C (vins doux naturels)
Cellaring: whites and rosés young; structured Rhône reds built to age

The Grenache family: Noir, Blanc, and Gris

The three Grenaches come from the same vine stock and are told apart by the color of the grape. The most widespread is Grenache Noir, a red grape that gives supple, generous, sun-drenched wines, often high in alcohol. Grenache Blanc and Grenache Gris are pale-berried mutations: the former gives round, ample whites, the latter pale wines, between white and rosé. Each type has its own dedicated page, with its selection and its pairings.

The main regions for Grenache

Grenache loves heat and sun, which explains its southern roots. It forms the heart of the blends of the southern Rhône Valley, in both Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas, most often alongside Syrah and Mourvèdre. It is also found in Languedoc-Roussillon, where it produces reds as well as vins doux naturels, and in Provence, where it goes into a large share of the rosés. In Spain, finally, Garnacha remains a mainstay of the vineyards in the north and east of the country.

Grenache and vins doux naturels

Roussillon has built part of its reputation on vins doux naturels, and Grenache plays a central role there: fortified to preserve the grape’s sugar, it gives round, generous wines in appellations such as Maury, Banyuls, and Rivesaltes. It is above all Grenache Noir that shapes them, sometimes supported by Grenache Gris. Find the details of fortification, styles, and pairings on each of these pages.

Serving and storing a Grenache wine

The temperature is set according to the color. A red Grenache is usually served at around 16 °C: its fruit then comes through without the alcohol taking over. A white or a rosé is drunk cooler, between 8 and 10 °C, and a vin doux naturel is served lightly chilled, at around 12 to 14 °C.

When it comes to cellaring, it all depends on the style. Whites and rosés are generally drunk in their first few years, on their freshness. The most structured reds, notably those from the Rhône Valley, can wait several years in the cellar. Store the bottles lying down, away from light and temperature swings.

Frequently asked questions about Grenache

Grenache Noir, Blanc, Gris: what is the difference?

The three Grenaches come from the same vine stock and are set apart by the color of the grape. Grenache Noir is a red grape, behind red wines and many southern rosés. Grenache Blanc and Grenache Gris are pale-berried mutations: the white gives round white wines, the gray pale wines, between white and rosé.

Where does Grenache come from?

Grenache is of Spanish origin, where it is known as Garnacha. It then spread around the Mediterranean and is today among the most widely planted grapes in the world.

Does Grenache make powerful wines?

Grenache Noir makes generous, warming wines, often high in alcohol, with fairly supple tannins. The style varies, however, with the region and the winegrower’s work, from a red for cellaring to a light rosé.

Which dishes go with a Grenache wine?

A red Grenache pairs readily with grilled meats, slow-cooked dishes, and Mediterranean cooking. A rosé is served as an aperitif or with grilled food, while a vin doux naturel goes with a chocolate dessert or a blue cheese.
