In the south of France, the sun-drenched vineyards of Languedoc-Roussillon stretch over 240,000 hectares from Nîmes to Leucate (Aude), making it one of the largest wine regions in the world. Amber AOC Rivesaltes is particularly well represented. Like the AOC Muscat de Rivesaltes, this AOC covers the communes of Rivesaltes, Banyuls and Maury, on some 5,300 hectares of soils of varying composition (clay, limestone, sand, gneiss, slate, granite and gravel). Muscat à petits grains and Muscat d'Alexandrie vines are planted in this appellation, in the Mediterranean climate of this geographical area, to produce vins doux naturels ambrés. These aromatic, amber-coloured wines owe their name to a specific method of production: ageing for at least 2 years in an oxidising environment.
