Corsica's vineyards represent the smallest wine production of all French vineyards, with less than 1% of the total. Created in 2009, the Vin de France (VDF) appellation groups together all “Vins Sans Indication Géographique” (VSIG), i.e. wines that are neither “Appellations d'Origine Controlée” (AOC) nor “Indications Géographiques Protégées” (IGP). This is because some winemakers use grape varieties other than those required by the appellation's specifications, or plant their vines on plots that are not part of the appellation area. A sign of “bottom-of-the-range” wine for many, VDFs can sometimes simply be original wines, with unconventional winemaking methods.
