Hillsides and Terraces, East Bank and West
On both sides of the Rhône, the appellation’s landscape is dominated by hillsides and terraces. The valley was a Mediterranean fjord during the Tertiary period; once the sea retreated, rain, wind and the river carved out today’s relief. The soils vary widely as a result: river terraces, marl and soft limestone, sand, sandstone or molasse.

From Pliny to Guyot: A Long History Along the Rhône
As far back as Roman times, Pliny praised the wines from the many hillsides along the Ouvèze, where villages such as Roaix, Vaison-la-Romaine, Séguret and Sablet stand today, on the river’s east bank.
The name itself was born on the other bank. In the 15th century, the area within the former civil diocese of Uzès, in today’s Gard, came to be called “la Côte du Rhône” for its closeness to the river. Vines grew on well-exposed slopes, away from the plains and any land fit for grain.
From 1615, planting restrictions protected quality. Each year, a “ban des vendanges” also set the harvest date so that only ripe grapes were picked.
On the east bank, vineyards spread in the late 18th century and throughout the 19th. In 1864, agronomist Jules Guyot, asked by Napoleon III to report on the state of France’s vineyards, wrote of the “Côtes du Rhône,” in the plural, for the vineyard running from Saint-Gilles to Tournon by way of Beaucaire.
Departments, New Grapes, Red-Only Names: Côtes du Rhône Villages Basics
Which French departments does Côtes du Rhône Villages cover?
Côtes du Rhône Villages covers four departments in the southern Rhône Valley: the Vaucluse (41 communes), the Gard (33), the Drôme (17) and the Ardèche (4). The Gard and the Ardèche line the river’s west bank, while the Drôme and the Vaucluse sit on its east bank.
Which new grape varieties are allowed in Côtes du Rhône Villages since 2024?
Since 2024, Côtes du Rhône Villages has allowed four so-called “adaptation” varieties: Carignan Blanc, Rolle (Vermentino), Floréal and Vidoc. Vidoc is for reds and rosés only. Used under an agreement with INAO, they are capped at 5% of a grower’s vineyard area and 10% of the blend. Floréal and Vidoc resist the main vine diseases.
Which Côtes du Rhône Villages names are reserved for red wine?
Ten of the 21 geographic names that can be added to Côtes du Rhône Villages on the label are reserved for red wine. They are Gadagne, Massif d’Uchaux, Nyons, Plan de Dieu, Puyméras, Saint-Andéol, Sainte-Cécile, Signargues, Suze-la-Rousse and Vaison-la-Romaine. Chusclan covers reds and rosés, and the other ten, such as Séguret or Visan, allow all three colors.
