Ideally located in the Saumur area in the Loire Valley, the town of Saumur has been a key wine trading location since the 12th century.
At that time, the region was known for its white wines. Nowadays, it is more the red ones and the crémant that are in the spotlight. The soils, essentially composed of chalk tuffeau white lands are unique and make the reputation of the region. They give rise to all sorts of wines : red, rosé or white ones, both still and sparkling.
In red, the main grape varieties are the Cabernet-Franc, the Cabernet-Sauvignon, the Pineau d’aunis, the Pinot noir, the Grolleau and the Gamay. They result in smooth wines that have soft tannins with red fruits aromas but also floral notes and some touch of spices and black fruits.
For the white wines, the Chenin, the Chardonnay and the Sauvignon are the main grape varieties. Whether they are still or sparkling, they distinguish themselves by their freshness and their yellow and white flowers aromas, enhanced with peach, pear and plum notes.
