As its name suggests, this vineyard is located in south-west France, between the Massif Central and the Pyrenees, and covers 11 départements (Aveyron, Dordogne, Gers, Haute-Garonne, Hautes- Pyrénées, Lot, Lot-et-Garonne, Tarn, Tarn-et-Garonne, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Landes). This includes the AOC Madiran. The AOC Madiran appellation area covers 1,200 hectares in the departments of Gers, Hautes-Pyrénées and Pyrénées-Atlantiques, on mainly limestone, clay and silica soils. Benefiting from an Atlantic oceanic climate, these terroirs are ideal for grape varieties such as Tannat, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, which are used to produce the Madiran AOC. These wines have good ageing potential (5 to 10 years), and are usually characterised by a powerful tannic structure, but can also be supple and full-bodied. They reveal notes of black fruit and spices on the palate and raspberry and juniper on the nose.

History of the AOC Madiran Appellation

Nestled in the heart of Southwest France, the Madiran appellation boasts a rich winemaking history dating back to Roman times, though it truly flourished during the Middle Ages. It was long considered the wine of pilgrims on the Way of Saint James to Santiago de Compostela. While AOC Madiran red wines are known for being robust and tannic in their youth, they mellow with age, revealing a silky texture and complex aromas.

Climate and Terroir of the AOC Madiran Appellation

  • Climate: Madiran enjoys an oceanic climate with continental influences, allowing for optimal ripening of the grapes while preserving a good level of acidity.
  • Soils: The terroir is characterized by a variety of soils, ranging from clay to limestone to pebbles. This diversity contributes to the richness and complexity of the wines produced.

Tannat: The Signature Grape of AOC Madiran

The signature grape of this region is Tannat. This red grape, native to the Pyrenean foothills, is often blended with complementary varieties such as Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Fer-Servadou. However, it is Tannat that gives AOC Madiran red wine its bold character, deep color, and remarkable longevity.

Style of AOC Madiran Wines

  • Appearance: Deep, almost black red color with purple highlights.
  • Nose: Powerful aromas of raspberry, dark fruits (plum, blackberry), spices (juniper), often accompanied by notes of leather or cocoa.
  • Palate: Madiran is a full-bodied red wine, rich in tannins with a solid structure. Despite its power, Madiran offers great harmony and a long-lasting finish, with impressive aging potential.
  • Serving Temperature: 16–18°C (61–64°F)
  • Aging Potential: 6 to 10 years (or more depending on the vintage and producer). AOC Madiran red wines can be enjoyed young, but they truly shine after a few years of aging, revealing softer, more harmonious notes.
