Vignobles Latorse: artisan winemakers in Entre-Deux-Mers since 1923

Vignobles Latorse

Artisans winemakers in Entre-Deux-Mers, in La Sauve, since 1923. 4 generations, 130 hectares, HVE 4 certification. Bordeaux red, white, rosé and sparkling.

Twenty minutes from Bordeaux, under the watchful eye of La Sauve-Majeure Abbey, the same family has been shaping wine since 1923. At Latorse, the vine is cultivated as much as the pioneering spirit: Entre-Deux-Mers' first temperature-controlled vat room, a partnership with legendary oenologist Michel Rolland, single-varietal cuvées and wines made without added sulphites. Four generations of audacity, producing generous and convivial Bordeaux wines sold direct from the estate.

A family adventure: four generations of artisan winemakers

It all begins in 1923. Pierre Jeanty, a blacksmith, buys Gabaron, a neglected property at the heart of the Entre-Deux-Mers. With his wife Zélida, he brings in a few animals, a henhouse, and plants the first vines. The family harvests of the early 1930s already set the spirit of the house.

In 1940, Albert Latorse marries Yvette Jeanty; in 1948, he acquires the neighbouring property of Riot. A tireless worker, he expands the vineyard and passes on the wine bug to his sons Michel and Henri. In the 1950s, the first vat room is built, Gabaron and Riot merge, and the first plots are registered under the AOC Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur appellations.

In the late 1970s, Michel and Henri arrive with a fixed idea: to bottle the wine rather than sell it in bulk. In 1976, they acquire a mechanical harvester and take over a large estate in Saint-Caprais-de-Bordeaux. The 1980s see them become the first estate in Entre-Deux-Mers to have a temperature-controlled vat room, and forge a decisive friendship with Michel Rolland, the world-renowned Bordeaux oenologist, around a shared passion for wine and nature.

Since 2008, David and Jacques, the fourth generation, have held the reins. A full restructuring of the vineyard, solar panels, environmental certification and a new range of single-varietal cuvées developed with cellar master Benoît: the estate keeps moving forward without ever losing its taste for audacity, true to the pioneering spirit inherited from Pierre Jeanty.

The estate's philosophy

Cultivating the vine as much as the pioneering spirit. Wines that reflect the family: generous, convivial, made for sharing and immediate pleasure, crafted with respect for the terroir and the environment.

A promising terroir at the heart of Entre-Deux-Mers

The estate is discovered by following the signs to La Sauve-Majeure, famous for its 12th-century Benedictine abbey. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a stop on the Camino de Santiago, this masterpiece of Romanesque architecture overlooks the village and seems to watch over the vines that surround it.

Entre-Deux-Mers, the vast rolling plateau between the Garonne and the Dordogne rivers, is the historic heartland of pleasure-driven Bordeaux wines. The Latorse family farms varied soils here: clay-sand, silica, clay-limestone and boulbène, each parcel with its own personality, feeding the diversity of the range.

Five châteaux, several appellations

AOC Bordeaux · Bordeaux Supérieur · Bordeaux Blanc · Bordeaux Rosé · Entre-Deux-Mers

Château Canteloup, Château l'Ombrière, Vieux Château Lamothe, Château Haut Riot and Château Gabaron: names that together compose a complete range of Bordeaux wines, from age-worthy reds to vibrant whites, from moreish rosés to a sparkling cuvée.

The grape varieties that shape the wines' identity

True to the family's pioneering spirit, the vineyard combines the great Bordeaux classics with bolder, more adventurous varieties.

For the reds and rosés

Merlot · Cabernet Sauvignon · Cabernet Franc · Malbec · Petit Verdot

Merlot brings fruit and roundness; the Cabernets provide structure and backbone. To venture beyond the expected, the family planted Malbec (2016) and Petit Verdot (2017), two varieties that bring colour, spice and unexpected aromas to both blends and single-varietal cuvées.

For the whites

Sémillon · Sauvignon · Muscadelle

The classic Bordeaux white trio: Sémillon for richness and length, Sauvignon for vivacity and citrus notes, Muscadelle for floral perfume. Together they produce fresh, aromatic and floral white wines.

A committed and HVE 4-certified viticulture

Vignobles Latorse practise a reasoned and sustainable viticulture, attentive to soil life. Everything that promotes aeration and microbial activity in the soil is encouraged: soil working, alternating tilled and grassed rows, precise vineyard gestures throughout the season, wood pulling, de-suckering, lifting, topping.

These efforts to preserve the ecosystem and enhance the terroir were recognised in 2019 with HVE Level 3 certification, France's highest environmental farming standard. In 2024, the estate achieved HVE Level 4. In 2021, conversion of several hectares to organic farming was also initiated.

In the cellar, the spirit remains the same as in the days of that first temperature-controlled vat room: mastery of temperatures, precise château-by-château vinifications, and the patient exploration of each grape variety led by David and cellar master Benoît.

The Vignobles Latorse range

Six families of wines, from classic age-worthy Bordeaux to the most free-spirited cuvées, each revealing a different facet of the estate.

Les Hautes Terres

AOC Bordeaux Blanc & Bordeaux Supérieur · Red & White · Barrel-aged

The estate's most accomplished cuvée. The white, golden-robed, unfolds subtle floral and citrus notes; the red, deep violet in colour, opens on a moreish nose of dark grilled fruits. Barrel ageing adds finesse and complexity to both.

Château l'Ombrière

AOC Bordeaux Supérieur · Red

Delicately wrapped in dark fruit and finely spiced, this is a fresh red lifted by a touch of vanilla. Silky tannins and a remarkable elegance: the gastronomic Bordeaux Supérieur of the range.

Château Canteloup

AOC Bordeaux Supérieur · Red

The flagship château, which also lends its name to the estate's wine tourism domain. Beautiful harmony of oak and fruit: the red is moreish and crunchy, dominated by black cherry.

Vieux Château Lamothe

AOC Bordeaux Rouge, Blanc & Rosé

A range built on lightness and fruit, across all three colours: an intense dark-fruit nose for the red, citrus notes for the white, red-fruit generosity for the rosé. Freshness and lovely vibrancy for everyday enjoyment.

Les Cuvées Atypiques

AOC Bordeaux Rouge & AOC Entre-Deux-Mers · Burgundy-format bottle · Single-varietal · No added sulphites

The new generation's creative playground. Recognisable by their Burgundy-shaped bottle, these cuvées reveal either a single grape variety or the pure character of the Entre-Deux-Mers terroir. The Latorse spirit of adventure, bottled.

Cuvée Amphore

AOC Bordeaux Rouge - Les Argiles de l'Abbaye · 100% Cabernet Franc

Aged in amphora for 6 to 8 months for a silky wine with a nose of raspberry and blackcurrant, an expression of pure Cabernet Franc that surprises with its freshness and suppleness.

Frequently asked questions about Vignobles Latorse and Entre-Deux-Mers wines

Where are Vignobles Latorse located and what appellations do they produce ?

The estate is based in La Sauve (Gabaron), at the heart of the Entre-Deux-Mers, around twenty minutes from Bordeaux, near La Sauve-Majeure Abbey. It produces wines under the AOC Bordeaux, Bordeaux Supérieur, Bordeaux Blanc, Bordeaux Rosé and Entre-Deux-Mers appellations, in red, white, rosé and sparkling.

What is the history of the estate and who runs it today ?

The story begins in 1923 with Pierre Jeanty at Gabaron, continues with Albert Latorse, then Michel and Henri, pioneers of bottling and modern winemaking in Entre-Deux-Mers. Since 2008, David and Jacques, the fourth generation, have been running Vignobles Latorse.

What is the Entre-Deux-Mers and what makes this terroir interesting ?

Entre-Deux-Mers is the large Bordeaux wine region situated between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers. It is the home of convivial, accessible pleasure-driven Bordeaux wines. At Latorse, clay-sand, silica, clay-limestone and boulbène soils give each parcel its own personality, under the eye of the UNESCO-listed La Sauve-Majeure Abbey.

What grape varieties do Vignobles Latorse grow ?

For reds and rosés: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, complemented by recently planted Malbec and Petit Verdot for their originality. For whites: Sémillon, Sauvignon and Muscadelle, the Bordeaux white trio that produces fresh, floral and citrus-driven wines.

Which wine should I choose to discover the estate ?

For a first discovery, Château Canteloup red is ideal: moreish, crunchy and typical of the estate. Lovers of more accomplished wines will turn to Les Hautes Terres, barrel-aged, while the curious will head for the Cuvées Atypiques (single-varietal or no-added-sulphite), which show another side of the house.

Is the estate committed to an environmental approach ?

Yes. Vignobles Latorse practise reasoned and sustainable viticulture and achieved HVE Level 3 certification in 2019, then the highest degree, HVE Level 4, in 2024. Conversion of several hectares to organic farming has also been underway since 2021.

Which Latorse wine pairs best with red meat ?

With red meat, grilled dishes or duck breast, Château l'Ombrière (Bordeaux Supérieur, silky and spiced tannins) and Les Hautes Terres red, barrel-aged, are safe bets. Château Canteloup red, more crunchy and fruit-forward, pairs happily with white meats, charcuterie or a cheese board.

Which Latorse wine pairs best with fish or seafood ?

The whites are perfect with seafood. Vieux Château Lamothe blanc, fine and vibrant, and Les Hautes Terres blanc, more complex thanks to barrel ageing, both shine alongside grilled fish, oysters and shellfish, a classic pairing for Entre-Deux-Mers Bordeaux blanc.

Which Latorse wine is best served as an aperitif ?

Vieux Château Lamothe rosé, moreish and fresh, works very well as a summer aperitif, as does the Singulier Blanc Entre-Deux-Mers, served well chilled.

What are the Cuvées Atypiques from Latorse ?

These are the estate's exploratory cuvées, recognisable by their Burgundy-shaped bottle. They showcase either a single grape variety (single-varietal), the character of the Entre-Deux-Mers terroir, or a wine made without added sulphites. A range designed for curious drinkers who want to step outside classic Bordeaux.

How long can you keep the estate's wines ?

Whites and rosés are best enjoyed young, within 2 to 3 years, to make the most of their freshness. The barrel-aged reds, such as Les Hautes Terres and Château l'Ombrière, keep comfortably for 5 to 8 years and gain complexity with bottle age.

Can you visit the estate ?

Yes. Twenty minutes from Bordeaux, Domaine Canteloup offers an immersion in the Entre-Deux-Mers way of life: a tasting room, a boutique and wine tourism experiences. It is the perfect opportunity to meet the family and taste the full range — which is also available to buy direct on Avenue des Vins, delivered across France and Europe.

How do I order Vignobles Latorse wines ?

The estate's wines are available to buy direct on Avenue des Vins, with careful delivery across France and Europe. Buying through a short supply chain means accessing the estate's cuvées without intermediaries, at a fair price, with the freshness and traceability of a direct purchase from the producer.
