Vignobles Fabien Castaing: Tradition, Terroir, and a Vision for the Future
A Family Legacy Rooted in the Bergerac Region. Since 1898, the Castaing family has cultivated the art of winemaking in Dordogne with a passion passed down through generations. Today, Fabien Castaing, the fifth generation, continues this legacy with renewed energy, combining respect for tradition with a sustainable and forward-looking vision. His philosophy: to reveal the authenticity of the Southwest terroirs through sincere, balanced, and environmentally responsible wines.
The Heart of Bergerac: Domaine de Moulin-Pouzy
The family’s historic estate, Domaine de Moulin-Pouzy, covers 54 hectares across Cunèges and Pomport, in the heart of the Bergerac region. Since taking over in 2008, Fabien has ushered the vineyard into a new era:
- 2009–2011: Acquisition of new plots in AOC Bergerac and Monbazillac (46 ha).
- 2013: Obtained HVE Level 3 certification.
- 2016: Purchase of Château Les Mailleries, 11 hectares certified organic since 2004.
- 2019: Start of the organic conversion of Domaine de Moulin-Pouzy and creation of an organic craft beer signed Fabien Castaing.
Today, the estate stands as a regional reference for sustainable viticulture and artisanal quality.
Distinctive Terroirs: Clay, Limestone, and Flint
The vineyards rest on a true geological mosaic of clay-limestone, flint, and boulbènes (sandy-clay soils). Each soil type shapes the character of the wines:
- Hard limestone: brings roundness, elegance, and persistence.
- Flint: adds freshness, precision, and minerality.
- Clay: provides richness and depth.
This diversity allows the full expression of the Southwest’s personality — from structured Bergerac reds to luscious Monbazillac sweet wines.
Southwest Grape Varieties: Expression, Balance, and Authenticity
Red & Rosé Wines
- Merlot: suppleness and roundness.
- Cabernet Sauvignon: power and structure.
- Malbec: intensity, deep color, and great aging potential.
White Wines
- Sémillon: smoothness and richness, perfect for sweet and dessert wines.
- Sauvignon Blanc & Gris: aromatic freshness and finesse.
- Muscadelle: floral and delicate complexity.
- Ugni Blanc: vivacity and bright acidity.
Each blend reveals the harmony between grape variety and terroir, crafting wines that are both modern and deeply authentic.
Château Les Mailleries: The Organic Gem of Sigoulès and Thénac
Acquired in 2016, Château Les Mailleries stands 150 meters above sea level on a remarkable mix of limestone, flint, clay, and boulbène soils. This 11-hectare organic vineyard produces wines of strong personality, combining aromatic richness and vibrant freshness. Low yields and dense planting (5,000 vines/ha) ensure precision, elegance, and longevity.
Environmental Commitment: From HVE to Organic Agriculture
Since 2013, the vineyard has held the HVE Level 3 (High Environmental Value) certification, built on four pillars:
- Biodiversity preservation
- Responsible use of inputs
- Sustainable soil management
- Water conservation
Since 2019, the estate has been converting to organic farming, affirming its dedication to ecological and responsible viticulture — fully aligned with the Vignerons Indépendants philosophy.
Authentic and Expressive Wines
Fabien Castaing’s wines reflect the richness and diversity of the Southwest:
- Classique Range: Rosé, Red, Dry White, and Sweet — the signature wines of Domaine de Moulin-Pouzy.
- Optimum Range: Red, Dry White, and Sweet — cuvées of character and precision.
