Château Mas des Tannes – The quiet strength of a living terroir in Montagnac

Between pine forests and garrigue, just a few kilometres from the Mediterranean Sea, Château Mas des Tannes embodies a sincere and committed vision of wine. Here, nothing is artificial. Nature sets the pace, the vine expresses itself freely, and the wines tell—without embellishment—the story of a preserved terroir.

A rare, protected and deeply rooted place

Located in the lower Hérault valley, between Montagnac and Villeveyrac, the estate benefits from an exceptional environment. Gently rolling hills, natural protection from pine forests and garrigue, a Mediterranean climate tempered by northern winds, and proximity to the sea—less than 10 kilometres away—create ideal conditions for vine growing.

The estate takes its name from a natural spring, one of the few in the area, around which this singular place developed. Formerly a sheepfold belonging to the Cistercian Abbey of Valmagne, the site still retains a peaceful, almost timeless atmosphere.

A history guided by intuition and respect for life

In 2006, Jean-Claude Mas acquired Château Mas des Tannes, drawn by the raw energy of the site and its viticultural potential. The vineyard had already been converted to organic farming in the early 1990s, long before such practices became widely embraced.

Today, the estate covers 55 hectares, including 36 hectares of vineyards, 5 hectares of olive groves, and a remarkable ecosystem hosting more than 200 species of bees. A true agricultural sanctuary where biodiversity plays a central role.

Living soils, the foundation of balance

The clay-limestone soils—sometimes gravelly or composed of dark clays—have never been treated with synthetic products. Deep underground, organic life thrives, naturally nourishing the vines.

The vines are vigorous, resilient and deeply rooted. The grapes, concentrated and perfectly healthy, give rise to wines that are structured, balanced and marked by great aromatic purity.

Organic viticulture without compromise

Viticulture is conducted entirely according to organic farming principles, with constant attention paid to natural balances. Here, the vine is guided rather than constrained. This philosophy is clearly reflected in the wines.

The red and white cuvées of Mas des Tannes stand out for their honesty, freshness and natural elegance. Wines that are approachable yet never simplistic, appealing both to enthusiasts and curious drinkers alike.

Mas des Tannes, or the embrace of ultra-rural authenticity

Château Mas des Tannes proudly claims a strong, almost radical identity: that of an ultra-rural estate, deeply connected to the land, living ecosystems and the long rhythm of time. Here, luxury is not found in appearance, but in the authenticity of the place and the coherence of the work carried out.

Why do organic wines often express their terroir more faithfully ?

Wines produced from organically farmed vineyards, such as those from Château Mas des Tannes, benefit from living soils and a naturally balanced vine. This approach encourages a truer expression of terroir, greater aromatic clarity and a natural harmony between structure, freshness and fruit, making these wines particularly accessible and appreciated by a wide audience.
