Cave des Vignerons de Montfrin - Côtes du Rhône & Costières de Nîmes - Gard, Rhône Valley

Between the Rhône and the Gardon, where rounded pebbles hold the warmth of the Mediterranean sun and the Mistral has swept through since time immemorial, a village decided, one hundred years ago, that wine would be a collective affair. Montfrin has never done things any other way.

Since 1924, here, wine is made together. And that changes everything.

History and origins of the estate

It is 1924. Viticulture in the Gard is experiencing a revival, the vines are regaining their vigour, and several Montfrin winemaking families make an audacious wager: to unite. Not out of necessity, but out of conviction. The idea that honest wines, born from a shared territory, carry more weight when they speak with a collective voice.

And so the Cave Coopérative de Montfrin is born. Not a cold corporate structure, not a wine factory, a human adventure, built on solidarity between people of the same land, on the pooling of tools and expertise, on the firm belief that the terroir between the Rhône and the Gardon deserves better than anonymity.

A century later, the Cave des Vignerons de Montfrin celebrated its 100th harvest in September 2024, a memorable evening bringing together more than 400 people who came to honour the generations that built this place. One hundred years of transmission, patience, and unwavering attachment to the soil of Montfrin.

100 harvests - a milestone that says it all

Celebrating a centenary in winemaking is not celebrating an anniversary, it is measuring what one hundred winters of pruning, one hundred summers of tending and one hundred autumns of harvesting truly mean when lived together. The cave has pursued the same mission since day one: to make the wines of Montfrin shine beyond the borders of the village.

The terroir and its unique character

The territory of Montfrin was born of an encounter. That of the Rhône and the Gardon, two rivers that have shaped, over thousands of years, these soils of rounded pebbles instantly recognisable: smooth, honey-coloured stones that absorb the warmth of the Provençal sun and release it overnight to the grape varieties growing above them.

The gentle, sun-drenched relief offers varied aspects across the four communes, Montfrin, Meynes, Comps and Théziers, each contributing to the diversity of the cuvées. And then there is the Mistral. That northerly wind, sometimes brutal, always honest, which naturally cleanses the vines, reduces fungal disease and concentrates aromas in the berries before harvest.

This triptych, rounded pebbles, Mediterranean light, Mistral, gives the cave's wines a distinctive personality: natural aromatic intensity, freshness preserved despite the hot Gard summers, and that generous roundness characteristic of the great Rhône valleys.

Working the vines and our commitments

The cave claims no revolution. It moves forward, methodically, guided by its convictions. The modernisation of winemaking equipment has been gradual, the methods evolve, but always with the same compass: to preserve the quality of the fruit and the identity of the Montfrin terroir.

Environmental commitment is at the heart of this evolution: 90 % of the cooperative members hold certified plots, whether under Organic Agriculture, HVE (High Environmental Value) or Terra Vitis. This is not a trend — it is the expression of a deep-rooted respect for the land that has been cultivated here for five generations.

Each harvest is a collective act. From the January pruning to the bottling line, each of the 80 cooperative members brings their contribution, and the sum of those individual parts produces wines that belong to no one in particular, and to the whole territory at once.

Grape varieties and appellations

The diversity of soils and aspects across the four communes of the territory is reflected directly in the range of grape varieties cultivated. For the reds and rosés: Grenache, undisputed king of the Rhône Valley; Syrah, with its deep, spiced aromas; Mourvèdre, tannic and structured; and Cinsault, lending freshness and elegance. For the whites: the round and generous Marsanne, and the floral, complex Roussanne.

These varieties are expressed through two AOC appellations, Côtes du Rhône and Costières de Nîmes, as well as several IGP designations (Gard, Pays d'Oc, Coteaux du Pont du Gard). Twenty cuvées in total, capable of winning over every palate, from the curious newcomer to the most discerning connoisseur.

The wine style and the cuvées

The wines of Montfrin have an identity you can recognise: ripe fruit that never tips into jamminess, velvety tannins carried by the thoughtful blending of the territory's grape varieties, and that southern generosity that invites you to share the bottle rather than analyse it. The ageing, conducted with care, honours the fruit's expression without weighing it down. Honest, approachable, bearing the character of the Rhône, these are wines made to be drunk, not locked away.

Cassiopée - AOC Côtes du Rhône White

Best-selling white · Marsanne & Roussanne

The cave's signature white. A floral and fruity nose, an ample and fresh palate, a mineral finish. A white Rhône wine that pairs as happily with an aperitif as it does with grilled fish, seafood or a seasonal tapenade.

Silex - AOC Côtes du Rhône Red

Best-selling red · Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre

The character red you were looking for. Ripe dark fruits, gentle spice, enveloping tannins — Silex embodies the energy of Montfrin's rounded pebble soils. Best served with Gard lamb, duck breast or a southern cheeseboardboard.

Oracle - AOC Costières de Nîmes Rosé

Best-selling rosé · Grenache, Cinsault

A Costières de Nîmes rosé exactly as you'd want it: a pale robe with pearlescent highlights, a nose of white peach and wild strawberry, a lively and persistent palate. The ideal companion for a terrace lunch, a homemade ratatouille or a summer evening by the Rhône.

The full range - 20 cuvées for every occasion

Beyond the trio of Cassiopée, Silex and Oracle, the cave offers an extended range: the Prestige cuvée in white and red (AOC Côtes du Rhône), Genèse Blanc, Orion (Costières de Nîmes), Lucy Blanc (IGP Coteaux du Pont du Gard), and several IGP Gard and Pays d'Oc. Twenty different ways to explore the terroir of Montfrin.

What you will only find at Montfrin

Arthur, the mammoth guardian of the cuvées. In 2007, an authentic Siberian mammoth skeleton entered the life of the cave. Arthur, as he is known, has since stood at the heart of the tasting cellar, a symbol of strength, longevity and memory. A geological wink at these rounded pebble soils, which are themselves witnesses to a history far older than wine.

A rare cooperative model, rooted in a century of loyalty. 80 winemakers, 800 hectares, 4 communes, one shared ambition since 1924. This model, where each member brings their vines and receives in return the value of a collective wine, is a quiet resistance to standardisation. Wines are not manufactured at Montfrin. They are cultivated together.

90% of plots are certified. HVE, Organic Agriculture, Terra Vitis, nearly all cooperative members hold an environmental certification on their parcels. A figure that speaks volumes about the mindset of those who have tended these vines for generations.

A territory between two rivers. The confluence of the Rhône and the Gardon creates here a microclimate and soils unique in the Gard, halfway between the power of the Rhône and the freshness of the Gardon. The wines of Montfrin carry this duality in every glass.

Frequently asked questions about the Cave des Vignerons de Montfrin

What is a wine cooperative and how does it differ from a private estate ?

In a wine cooperative such as Montfrin's, each winemaker brings the grapes from their own vines, and vinification is handled collectively by the cave. This allows them to achieve a level of equipment, expertise and consistency that few individual estates can match. At Montfrin, this collective model has existed since 1924, it is as much a way of life as a business strategy.

Why buy Montfrin wines directly, with no middleman ?

Because every bottle leaves directly from the Montfrin cave, bypassing any third-party warehouse. You receive the wine in the exact storage conditions maintained by the winemakers themselves, at its best, at a fair price. Buying direct also means respecting the work of 80 families who have tended these vines for generations.

What is the difference between Côtes du Rhône and Costières de Nîmes ?

Côtes du Rhône covers a vast stretch of the Rhône Valley, with reds dominated by Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Costières de Nîmes, a Gard appellation, extends across rounded pebble terroirs close to the Camargue, soils that give the wines a more southerly identity, with greater mineral freshness. The Montfrin cave produces cuvées in both appellations, reflecting the dual geographical identity of its territory.

Are the Cave de Montfrin wines organic ?

90 % of cooperative members hold certified plots under an environmental label, Organic Agriculture, HVE (High Environmental Value) or Terra Vitis. Responsible vine cultivation is a stated priority of the cave, championed by a majority of winemakers who have been committed to sustainable practices for many years.

What food pairs well with the wines of Montfrin ?

The generous, southern character of Montfrin wines makes them versatile at the table. Cassiopée white pairs beautifully with grilled fish, seafood or a brandade de Nîmes. Silex red is a natural match for Provençal daube, roast lamb or a selection of southern cheeses. Oracle rosé is made for summer dining, ratatouille, bouillabaisse, tapenade, and long evenings on the terrace.

Who is Arthur the Mammoth, and can you see him in person ?

Arthur is an authentic Siberian mammoth skeleton, acquired by the cave in 2007. A genuine natural curiosity, he is on display in the Montfrin tasting cellar and draws visitors from across the region every year. An unlikely emblem that perfectly captures the cave's deep roots in a long history, one stretching far further back than wine itself. Current vintage prices and availability can be found directly on the Avenue des Vins boutique.
