Domaines Bunan: organic Bandol wines, family-run since 1961

Domaines Bunan

An independent winegrowing family in Bandol and Provence since 1961. Three terroirs, three generations, certified organic farming. Old-vine Mourvèdre, Provence rosés and rare Bandol whites.

Some estates have nothing left to prove, yet keep searching. Domaines Bunan brings together three terroirs under one name, between Bandol and Provence: two brothers who started it all in 1961, and today a third generation tending old Mourvèdre vines that overlook the Mediterranean. Organic wines, made for the table and for time, where every oak cask bears the name of a family member. A great Bandol estate, available to order direct from the grower on Avenue des Vins.

Two brothers, three terroirs, three generations

It all began in 1961 with brothers Paul and Pierre Bunan, driven by a shared passion for the vine. Their first foothold was at La Cadière-d’Azur, with the creation of Moulin des Costes, a characterful terroir facing the Mediterranean. Their love for Bandol was immediate, almost instinctive.

In 1969 the adventure grew with the acquisition of Château la Rouvière, in Le Castellet. On these south-facing slopes, old Mourvèdre vines overlook the sea and yield powerful, deep wines. Then, in 1978, the family revived the Bélouvé vineyard, once farmed by monks, to craft wines in AOP Côtes de Provence.

Today the third generation is at the helm. Françoise, trained in fine arts, brings an artistic and cultural dimension to the estate. Laurent, an oenologist, has worked for over thirty years to build Bandol’s international reputation. Claire leads the commercial strategy and trade relations. Philippe, an agricultural engineer, oversees the winemaking, guided by respect for the terroir. A family of builders, united by one conviction: to create emotion and pass on a living heritage.

The estate’s philosophy

To express each terroir faithfully, with respect for living things. Certified organic farming, natural balance and biodiversity first. And a symbol that says it all: at the Bunan estate, every oak cask is named after a family member. A heritage proudly carried, from the vine to the glass.

Bandol and Provence: Mourvèdre, sunshine and dry-stone terraces

Domaines Bunan chose to settle on sites naturally suited to the vine: strong sunlight, stony soils, dry-stone terraces (restanques) and great geological diversity. Once planted with olive, apricot and almond trees and immortelle, these lands are now entirely devoted to the vine, each terroir expressing its own identity.

The Moulin des Costes, the estate’s first foothold, covers 30 hectares at La Cadière-d’Azur and Le Castellet on Triassic clay-limestone soils. Château la Rouvière, in Le Castellet, unfolds its south-facing slopes where old Mourvèdre vines overlook the sea: a great wine for cellaring. Bélouvé, a former monastic vineyard, yields fresh, bright Côtes de Provence. The family also keeps more confidential cuvées, Charriage, Mas de la Rouvière, Château Margillière in Coteaux Varois, and Provençal specialities (orange wine, old marc, ratafia).

Bandol, the homeland of Mourvèdre

AOC Bandol - La Cadière-d’Azur & Le Castellet - AOP Côtes de Provence - AOP Coteaux Varois en Provence

Bandol is the great terroir of Mourvèdre, a sun-loving, late-ripening variety that finds here the warmth it needs to produce long-ageing reds, structured and deep, and gastronomic rosés celebrated around the world.

The grape varieties of Domaines Bunan

The blend is led by the great Mediterranean varieties, Mourvèdre for the reds, and by Provençal white varieties for rare, precise Bandol whites.

Red and rosé varieties

Mourvèdre - Grenache - Cinsault - Syrah

Mourvèdre is the estate’s signature: it gives the Bandol wines their structure, tannins and ageing potential. Grenache brings roundness, Cinsault the finesse and freshness of the rosés, and Syrah the spicy notes of the Provence cuvées.

White varieties

Clairette - Ugni Blanc - Bourboulenc - Rolle

Bandol whites are rare and sought-after. Clairette and Ugni Blanc form the backbone of the estate’s whites, Bourboulenc brings freshness and tension, and Rolle (Vermentino) the roundness and floral aromas of the Bélouvé in Côtes de Provence.

In the vines and the cellar: organic farming and cask ageing

Work in the vines favours natural balance, biodiversity and respect for people. The estate has long been committed to organic, responsible viticulture, validated by independent labels: AB, Ecocert, HVE, Independent Winegrowers and Vignobles & Découvertes.

In the cellar, the great Bandol reds are aged in the traditional way, in oak foudres and barrels, each one named after a family member. This patient ageing gives the Moulin des Costes and Château la Rouvière cuvées their depth and cellaring potential, while the whites and rosés are vinified to preserve fruit, freshness and brightness.

The Domaines Bunan range

Nine organically farmed cuvées from the estate’s three terroirs: the cellar-worthy Bandol of Moulin des Costes and Château la Rouvière, and the fresh, accessible Côtes de Provence of Bélouvé.

Frequently asked questions about Domaines Bunan

What makes a Bandol red distinctive ?

Bandol reds are dominated by Mourvèdre, a late-ripening, sun-loving variety that thrives on the appellation’s sunny slopes. It gives structured, deep wines built for cellaring, such as Moulin des Costes (7 to 10 years) or Château la Rouvière (10 to 15 years), traditionally aged in foudres and barrels.

What is the difference between Moulin des Costes and Château la Rouvière ?

These are the estate’s two Bandol terroirs. Moulin des Costes, the first foothold at La Cadière-d’Azur, gives traditional Bandol, round and accessible (cellaring 7 to 10 years). Château la Rouvière, in Le Castellet, comes from old south-facing vines: the estate’s deepest, most ambitious cuvée, built to age 10 to 15 years.

Are Domaines Bunan wines organic ?

Yes. The estate practises certified organic farming (AB, Ecocert) and also holds the HVE (High Environmental Value), Independent Winegrowers and Vignobles & Découvertes labels. The cuvées offered on Avenue des Vins come from organic farming.

What is the Bélouvé cuvée ?

Bélouvé is the Domaines Bunan terroir in AOP Côtes de Provence, a vineyard once farmed by monks and replanted by the family in 1978. It gives fresh, precise, bright wines, a 100% Rolle white, a blended rosé and a fruit-forward red, more accessible and to enjoy young (cellaring 1 to 3 years).

Which Domaines Bunan wine should I choose to discover the estate ?

To discover the appellation, the Moulin des Costes Rouge is the ideal traditional Bandol. For a gentler budget, the Bélouvé (white, rosé or red) in Côtes de Provence is a fine entry point. And for a great cellaring bottle, the Château la Rouvière Rouge is the signature cuvée.

At what temperature should Bandol and Provence wines be served ?

Bandol’s cellaring reds are best around 16-18°C; the Moulin des Costes Rouge benefits from being served at 18°C after decanting. Rosés and whites are served cooler, around 8-10°C, to preserve their freshness and fruit.

How can I order Domaines Bunan wines direct ?

Avenue des Vins lets you order Domaines Bunan wines directly, with no middleman, as close as possible to the cellar-door price. Delivery is handled with care across France and Europe, the most direct way to support this family Bandol estate and enjoy its organic cuvées.
