Domaine Patrice Magni: independent grower in Châteauneuf-du-Pape since 1930

Domaine Patrice Magni

Independent grower in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, four generations since 1930. 12 ha in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, 4 ha in Côtes du Rhône. Reds, whites and rosé sold direct.

Some estates are not told in slogans, but in generations. In Châteauneuf-du-Pape, on the rolled pebbles that made the appellation famous, the Magni family has been growing vines since 1930. Four generations have passed down the same gesture, the same demands, the same cellar. Today led by Thomas, these old vines yield deep reds, award-winning whites and a moreish rosé that you order direct, with no middleman.

A family story: four generations of growers in Châteauneuf-du-Pape

It all begins in 1930. Henri Pichot, originally from the Ardèche, settles in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and learns the craft of the vine alongside Fernand Mayard. In the 1940s he becomes a sharecropper (métayer) and vinifies his first cuvées: the cellar still holds a bottle from the 1947 vintage. Patiently, plot by plot, he buys vines in the appellation, then, through a life-annuity sale, parcels in Côtes du Rhône that enlarge the property.

When he passes away in 1975, his son-in-law André Magni takes over. He significantly expands the vineyard and, in 1973, builds his own winery; at the time the wine is sold mostly in bulk to the local trade.

In 1993, André hands over to his eldest son Patrice, who gives the estate its name. Patrice ushers in a new era: he plants the first white grape varieties, bottles the entire harvest, launches the red cuvée « Sensation » and the Côtes du Rhône « La Cueillette », then, with the guidance of œnologist Philippe Cambie, creates the Roussanne cuvée that would win first prize several times at the Saint-Marc fair.

Since 2011, it is Thomas, Henri's great-grandson, holder of a viticulture and œnology diploma (BTS), who runs the estate alongside his father. To him we owe two cuvées that speak of his generation: a Côtes du Rhône rosé named « City » and a Châteauneuf-du-Pape red, « Le Pressoir », a blend of grenache and mourvèdre. The same obsession runs through all four generations: drawing the best possible quality from these vines.

The estate's philosophy

Work with no middleman, in trust, and offer its Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côtes du Rhône wines on the best terms. From the vine to bottling at the estate, every step stays in the family's hands.

An exceptional terroir at the heart of Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Perched at around 120 metres of altitude, halfway between Avignon and Orange, the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC stretches across the Vaucluse, on the left bank of the Rhône. It is one of the most famous terroirs of the southern Rhône Valley, and the estate's vines lie at its very heart.

The subsoil is made of red clay and rolled pebbles, deposited by the Rhône during the ice age (the famous diluvium alpin). These pebbles are the appellation's signature: by day they store the sun's heat; by night they release it back to the bunches. The result is a slow, complete ripening of the berries, which gives the wines their richness and their sun-soaked character.

Two appellations, one know-how

AOC Châteauneuf-du-Pape · AOC Côtes du Rhône

The estate makes red and white Châteauneuf-du-Pape on its 12 hectares at the heart of the appellation, and red and rosé Côtes du Rhône on 4 hectares. Two neighbouring terroirs, vinified with the same rigour, for a range that runs from the everyday pleasure wine to the great cellar-worthy cuvée.

The grape varieties that shape the wines' identity

Châteauneuf-du-Pape allows thirteen grape varieties; the estate works a selection of them, split between reds and whites.

For the reds

Grenache · Syrah · Mourvèdre

Grenache is the backbone of the reds: it brings fruit, roundness and sun-soaked generosity. Syrah adds colour, spice and structure; mourvèdre, later-ripening, brings depth, tannins and ageing potential, notably in the Le Pressoir cuvée.

For the whites

Roussanne · Grenache blanc · Clairette

Roussanne is the star of the house: aromatic richness, body and length, heightened by barrel ageing. Grenache blanc brings volume and flesh, clairette freshness and floral finesse. Together they sign whites that are full and mineral.

Artisanal viticulture in the service of quality

Here, quality is decided first in the vines and by hand. Harvesting is manual, often carried out in the cool of the morning and in individual crates to preserve the integrity of the grapes, a care that is especially marked on the whites and the rosé, where aromatic freshness is everything.

In the cellar, each grape variety is vinified in the way that suits it best. Grenache rests in concrete tanks, which preserve the fruit; syrah and mourvèdre are aged in Burgundy barrels, which refine the tannins. The whites alternate stainless steel, for vivacity, and oak for the roussanne, which gains body and complexity. The Châteauneuf reds take their time: eighteen months of ageing before bottling.

Everything happens at the estate, from harvest to bottling, with full control over the chain and complete traceability. That is the guarantee of a wine faithful, vintage after vintage, to the signature of the house.

Frequently asked questions about Domaine Patrice Magni and Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines

Where is Domaine Patrice Magni located and which appellations does it produce ?

The estate is based in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in the Vaucluse, on the left bank of the Rhône, between Avignon and Orange. It produces AOC Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines (reds and whites) on 12 hectares at the heart of the appellation, and AOC Côtes du Rhône (red and rosé) on 4 hectares.

What is the estate's history and who runs it today ?

The adventure starts in 1930 with Henri Pichot, followed by his son-in-law André Magni, then by Patrice Magni who gave the estate its name in 1993. Since 2011 it has been run by Thomas Magni, the founder's great-grandson and holder of a viticulture and œnology diploma, alongside his father: four generations of independent growers.

What makes the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation so special ?

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is one of the flagship appellations of the Rhône Valley. Its signature: a red-clay soil covered with rolled pebbles that store the day's heat and release it back to the grapes at night, for optimal ripeness. Tradition allows thirteen grape varieties, giving rich, complex, cellar-worthy wines.

Which grape varieties does the estate grow ?

For the reds: grenache (dominant, for fruit and roundness), syrah (colour and spice) and mourvèdre (structure and ageing). For the whites: roussanne (richness and length), grenache blanc (volume) and clairette (freshness). This palette allows a range from light rosé to great cellar-worthy reds.

Which wine should you choose to discover the estate ?

To step into the estate's world without going wrong, the Châteauneuf-du-Pape red (grenache-syrah) is the ideal gateway: typical, generous and accessible. White lovers should turn to the award-winning Roussanne cuvée, and the curious to Le Pressoir, more structured and signed by the new generation.

Which is the estate's most awarded cuvée ?

The Roussanne cuvée, a 100% roussanne Châteauneuf-du-Pape white aged in new oak, created with the guidance of œnologist Philippe Cambie. It has won first prize several times at the Saint-Marc competition, a benchmark for the appellation. It is the most prestigious wine in the house.

Which wine should you serve with meat ?

With red meat, the Le Pressoir cuvée (grenache-mourvèdre) is a wonderful match for a matured rib of beef, a slow-cooked shoulder of lamb or a tagine. The classic Châteauneuf red pairs with duck breast, and the Côtes du Rhône red with a beef grill or pork collar.

Which wine should you serve with fish or seafood ?

The whites are perfect here. The Roussanne cuvée, powerful and aromatic, elevates a pan-seared red mullet, linguine with bottarga or a bouillabaisse. The blended Châteauneuf-du-Pape white, fresher, is ideal with John Dory fillet or green asparagus.

Which wine should you serve as an aperitif ?

The Côtes du Rhône rosé « City » (100% grenache noir), supple and fruity, is the aperitif wine par excellence: serve it well chilled, with Asian dishes, grilled octopus or a tomato salad. For a more gastronomic aperitif, a glass of Châteauneuf-du-Pape white will also work beautifully.

Which wine offers the best value for money ?

The Côtes du Rhône red is the best value in the range: a generous, ready-to-drink wine, made by a Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate, at a gentle price. To move up a level, the classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape red remains very affordable given the prestige of the appellation.

How long can the estate's wines be kept ?

The Côtes du Rhône rosé and red are best drunk young, within 2 to 3 years, to enjoy their fruit. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape reds, aged 18 months, keep longer: count on 5 to 10 years for the classic red, and even more for the more structured Le Pressoir cuvée. The whites are happily enjoyed within 3 to 5 years.

Does the estate farm its vines responsibly ?

The estate farms its vines in an artisanal way, with manual harvesting in individual crates and in the cool of the morning, and winemaking at the estate grape by grape. This careful approach, attached to the quality of the fruit and to respect for the rolled-pebble terroir, is at the heart of the Magni family's work.
