Domaine du Puy du Maupas: 45 Hectares of Organic Vineyards in AOC Côtes du Rhône, Puyméras, and Vinsobres
In the heart of the Drôme Provençale, nestled between Mont Ventoux and the hills of the Vaucluse, Domaine du Puy du Maupas spans over 45 hectares under the Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée: Côtes du Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Villages Puyméras, and Vinsobres—recognized as the region's first cru. Certified organic since 2012, this family-run estate cultivates its vines with respect for the soil and biodiversity, producing authentic wines that are fruity and mineral-driven.
An Exceptional Terroir Between Sun and Microclimate
Located at the crossroads of Mediterranean and mountain climates, the vineyard benefits from an ideal microclimate. The alternation of sunny days and cool nights, combined with clay-limestone soils, gives rise to elegant and well-structured wines. The estate is composed of diverse parcels—sand, rolled pebbles, red sandstone—offering a wide aromatic range, from crisp, fruity profiles to powerful, age-worthy wines.
A Family Legacy Since 1800
Established in the early 19th century, the Sauvayre family has shaped the estate generation after generation. Originally focused on mixed farming, the estate gradually turned to viticulture. In 1987, Christian Sauvayre began vinifying in a private cellar, giving the vineyard new momentum. Today, his daughter Amélie has taken up the mantle and passionately leads the estate. Together, father and daughter combine their expertise to create sincere wines that reflect their terroir.
A Natural and Respectful Approach to Viticulture
Vineyard work is carried out without chemical inputs. Natural grass cover, green manure, mechanical weeding, and organic treatments help preserve the soil’s natural balance. The vineyard is planted with typical Rhône Valley grape varieties: Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, as well as white varieties such as Clairette, Viognier, and Marsanne. Each intervention is carefully considered to enhance grape quality, including green harvesting, manual leaf thinning, and strict ripeness control.
Modern Winemaking in Service of Taste
The cellar combines tradition and innovation. Equipped with temperature-controlled vats, it allows for long and carefully managed macerations: 20 days for Côtes du Rhône and up to 40 days for Vinsobres. Since 2004, a barrel cellar dug into the safre (compact sandstone) ensures optimal wine aging at a constant temperature. This natural cellar enhances the expression of aromas, yielding silky tannins and beautiful complexity.
