Domaine Koehly: A Family Story at the Heart of the Alsace Vineyards
In Kintzheim, at the foot of the famous Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg, Domaine Koehly has mastered the art of winemaking for several generations. Surrounded by vineyards, forests and typical Alsatian landscapes, the estate benefits from a rare terroir, ideal for crafting expressive, precise and generous wines.
Here, every plot is tended with patience, and every cuvée tells a story of family and terroir.
A Family Estate for Three Generations
Domaine Koehly is above all a family adventure. In the 1930s, the estate still followed the rhythm of polyculture: vines, tobacco, livestock… The vineyard held only a modest place, and the harvest was delivered to the cooperative or sold in bulk.
Over the decades, the family made a decisive choice: to dedicate themselves entirely to Alsace wine. In the 1970s, Jean-Marie Koehly settled at the estate and shifted its focus fully toward viticulture. In 2010, his son Joseph joined him to take charge of the vineyards and the cellar.
Starting with just a few ares of vines, they now cultivate several dozen hectares around Kintzheim. A steady, thoughtful expansion that never lost sight of the estate’s spirit: remain a family-run house, close to its customers and deeply connected to the land.
Sustainable Viticulture and High Environmental Value Certification
Jean-Marie and Joseph have chosen a viticulture that respects nature. The estate is certified High Environmental Value (HVE level 3), the highest distinction of this label.
In practical terms, this means:
- reasoned practices that protect biodiversity,
- limited and controlled treatments,
- soil enriched with farm manure and plants,
- careful management of water and vine vigour.
The goal is simple: to produce healthy grapes in a living environment and craft wines that truly reflect their terroir.
An Exceptional Terroir at the Foot of Haut-Koenigsbourg
Domaine Koehly benefits from a privileged location: well-exposed slopes, varied soils, and the influence of the Vosges mountains. Kintzheim sits at the heart of the Alsace Wine Route, in an area renowned for the quality of its wines.
The vines thrive on well-known lieux-dits such as Hahnenberg or on the hills of neighbouring Grands Crus. These terroirs produce taut and precise Rieslings, ample Pinot Gris, and aromatic, profound Gewurztraminers.
This diversity of soils and exposures allows the estate to offer a rich and varied range where each wine expresses its own personality.
