Château de Marmorières: The Harmony of Heritage, Innovation, and Terroir Respect

Established in 1826 in the heart of the protected La Clape massif in southern France, the de Woillemont family has upheld a tradition of winemaking excellence. Since acquiring Château de Marmorières, each generation has contributed to the estate’s growth, replanting after the phylloxera crisis and building, in 1901, the legendary foudre cellar.

Faithful to this heritage, the family has modernized the facilities with care. The old concrete vats were renovated and complemented with 1,400 hectolitres of small stainless steel tanks (from 40 to 120 hl), allowing precise vinification. This subtle balance between tradition and innovation ensures total control of fermentation and aging, producing wines of remarkable purity and elegance.

Family Heritage and Estate Modernization

At the heart of the La Clape Cru, renowned for its mineral character and Mediterranean influence, Château de Marmorières cultivates 120 hectares of sun-drenched vines. Southern varieties such as Grenache Noir, Syrah, Bourboulenc, and Grenache Blanc thrive on clay-limestone soils swept by sea breezes.

The ongoing restructuring of the vineyard includes replanting the historic Carignan grape, which lends the wines intense aromas of red fruit, oriental spices, and wild herbs. In 2005, the acquisition of Commanderie de Saint Pierre la Garrigue added a new geological dimension to the estate, enriching the diversity of its terroirs. Each plot is vinified separately, revealing the singular identity of the soil and its varietal character.

An Exemplary Environmental Commitment

Château de Marmorières is deeply committed to sustainability, prioritizing biodiversity and soil preservation. The estate uses organic composts, cover crops, and bans synthetic products, maintaining harmony with olive trees, almond trees, and local wildlife.

This approach has earned the certifications Organic Agriculture and High Environmental Value (HVE). The 2022 vintage, shaped by a mild summer and maritime cloud cover, stands out for its minerality, aromatic finesse, and rare elegance—a perfect expression of the estate’s balanced and luminous style.

International Recognition and Awards

The commitment to quality at Château de Marmorières is regularly recognized by prestigious competitions and critics:

  • Gold medals at Mâcon and Lyon competitions
  • Scores of 90–94 points from Decanter
  • Frequent selections in leading French wine guides

These distinctions celebrate the patient, meticulous work of a family that has combined ancestral know-how with a modern vision of wine for nearly two centuries.
