Domaine de Labarthe: organic Gaillac growers since 1550, 15 generations of the Albert family

Domaine de Labarthe - Organic Gaillac (Tarn)

Domaine de Labarthe is a family wine estate in Gaillac, located in Castanet, in the Tarn (Occitanie). Owned by the Albert family since 1550, it is one of the oldest family estates in the vineyard and farms around sixty hectares under organic certification.

On the slopes of the right bank of the Tarn, between Albi and Cordes-sur-Ciel, the Albert family has been growing vines since 1550. Fifteen generations on, Domaine de Labarthe makes 100% organic Gaillac wines, faithful to the native grapes of the South-West, available direct from the grower on Avenue des Vins.

Fifteen generations of growers since 1550

The Albert family has owned Domaine de Labarthe since 1550, as authentic documents in the name of Guillaume Albert, the founding ancestor in the 16th century, confirm. Fifteen generations have since followed on this terroir, making Labarthe one of the oldest family estates in the Gaillac appellation.

The story gathered pace in the 1920s, with the first direct sales: Camille sold his Mauzac 'bourrus' in Paris. In the 1950s, René released the estate's first bottles. Some twenty years later, Paulette and Jean developed the estate, before their son Jean-Paul created the current range of wines in 1983.

Today, Jean-Paul Albert and his son Thibault farm around sixty hectares of vines, planted with typically Gaillac grape varieties and grown entirely under organic certification.

The estate's commitment

Here, organic is not a marketing line but a way of working: caring for the life of the soils, compost made from local manure, green manures and treatments limited to copper and sulphur. The aim is simple: to nurture the ecosystem of the land and obtain healthy, expressive grapes, the essence of the Gaillac terroir.

The slopes of Gaillac, between Albi and Cordes-sur-Ciel

The vineyard lies in Castanet, on the clay-limestone slopes of the right bank of the Tarn, in the heart of the Gaillac appellation. It enjoys a transitional climate, between Atlantic and Mediterranean influences, well suited to ripening the grapes. The estate is 10 km from the medieval town of Cordes-sur-Ciel and 15 km from Albi and its UNESCO-listed episcopal city.

Gaillac is one of the oldest vineyards in France, and Domaine de Labarthe grows its emblematic grapes: Braucol (Fer Servadou), Duras, Mauzac and Loin de l'Œil, as well as old and rare varieties such as Verdanel and Prunelart, of which it is one of the few producers in France.

AOC Gaillac - Castanet (Tarn)

Clay-limestone slopes of the right bank of the Tarn

A South-West terroir, between Atlantic and Mediterranean influences, where the native grapes of Gaillac thrive.

Organic, from the vine to the cellar

The whole estate is certified organic. The family makes its own compost from local animal manure and sows green manures to enrich the soils. In the vines, only copper and sulphur are used: no weedkiller, no synthetic products.

This healthy harvest feeds an organic winemaking process, cuvée by cuvée. The estate is a member of the Independent Winegrowers: from the vine to bottling, everything is done at the property, for wines that are faithful to their terroir.

The range of Domaine de Labarthe

Cuvée Guillaume

AOC Gaillac red - Braucol - 9 months in oak barrels

Prunelart

AOC Gaillac red - Prunelart grape - aged in concrete vat

An almost forgotten red grape, grown in Gaillac four centuries ago, of which the estate is one of the few producers. A dark colour, aromas of plum, prune and violet, and coated tannins: a very distinctive wine for cellaring.

Tradition Rouge

AOC Gaillac red - Braucol, Duras, Syrah

A lovely ruby colour, complex aromas with spicy notes and a supple palate, on a dominant red fruit. The everyday red, easy-drinking and generous.

Méthode Ancestrale Gaillacoise

The estate's sparkling wine, made using the Gaillac ancestral method, regarded as the oldest sparkling winemaking method in the world. A fresh, lively fizz, perfect as an aperitif or with dessert.

Tradition Doux

AOC Gaillac sweet white - Mauzac, Loin de l'Œil

The natural sweetness of the Gaillac white grapes, for a fruity, balanced medium-sweet white. Perfect with dessert or foie gras.

The estate offers many other cuvées: the reds Duras, Désirs de Labarthe and G15, the dry whites Héritage, Premières Côtes, Fraîcheur Perlée and Verdanel, the sweet white Grains d'Or (late harvest), a Gaillac rosé, bag-in-box formats, spirits (eau de vie, gin) and organic grape juice. Who runs Domaine de Labarthe today ?

The estate is now run by Jean-Paul Albert and his son Thibault, the fifteenth generation of the family. What is the Gaillac appellation ?

Gaillac is one of the oldest vineyards in France, located in the Tarn, in Occitanie, around the town of Gaillac. The appellation produces a great diversity of wines: reds, rosés, dry and sweet whites, and sparkling wines. It stands out for its native grapes, such as Duras and Braucol for reds, Mauzac and Loin de l'Œil for whites, inherited from a long South-West tradition.

What grape varieties does Domaine de Labarthe grow ?

The estate grows the emblematic grapes of Gaillac. For reds: Braucol (also called Fer Servadou), Duras, Syrah and Prunelart, a rare grape that the estate is one of the few to produce. For whites: Mauzac, Loin de l'Œil and Verdanel, an old and rare variety. This native palette gives wines with a typically South-West character.

What is the Gaillac ancestral method ?

The Gaillac ancestral method is regarded as the oldest way of making sparkling wine in the world. Unlike the traditional (Champagne) method, it relies on a single fermentation: the wine is bottled before its fermentation is complete, with no added liqueur. The result is fine bubbles and a light, natural sweetness. Domaine de Labarthe offers an organic version of it.

What is the Prunelart grape ?

Prunelart is an old, rare red grape from Gaillac, almost forgotten, grown in the region some four centuries ago. As early as the 16th century, the agronomist Olivier de Serres described it as giving one of the best wines in the Kingdom. Its small black bunches give a deeply coloured, structured wine, with aromas of candied red fruit, plum and violet. Domaine de Labarthe is one of its few producers.
