Domaine Aimé Stentz, six generations of winegrowers in Wettolsheim, Alsace
Domaine Aimé Stentz - organic Alsace wines and Crémant (Wettolsheim, Haut-Rhin)
Domaine Aimé Stentz is a family estate of vignerons récoltants (grower-producers) in Wettolsheim, Alsace. Across 13 hectares farmed organically and certified since 2010, it crafts nine cuvées from two lieux-dits and five grands crus.
Since 1919, one family has tended vines at the foot of the Wettolsheim hills. Six generations on, Domaine Aimé Stentz still blends patience and precision: finely chiselled Alsace whites, Crémant and a rare grand cru Pinot Noir, to discover direct on Avenue des Vins.
Domaine Aimé Stentz, a family saga since 1919
It all began in 1919, when the Stentz house was founded in Wettolsheim, one of the emblematic winegrowing villages of the Alsace vineyard. Here the vines pass from father to son, each generation adding its own stone to the family building.
In the 1960s, Aimé Stentz, the third generation, took over the estate from his father. He became its founding figure in the modern sense: the first to harvest and vinify only his own vines, then across some 11 hectares. He was also the one who uncovered, in his plots, the remains of Roman ruins, a site since classified as historic, a witness to the very ancient winegrowing vocation of this land. The estate still bears his first name today.
The transmission has never stopped. Marc Stentz, the fifth generation, took the helm in 2019 on the passing of his father Etienne. In 2023 he entrusted the winemaking and production to Brice Johner, with whom he had studied at the Rouffach agricultural college. In 2026, Brice Johner took over the business and became the sixth generation to write the story of Domaine Aimé Stentz, in keeping with its spirit.

Wettolsheim, a land of grands crus
Wettolsheim is one of the cradles of the Alsace vineyard, renowned for the richness of its soils. Around the village, the estate's vines rest on a mosaic of clay-limestone, granitic and sandy terroirs. This geological diversity is a gift: it lets each grape variety find the soil that suits it, giving the cuvées their distinct personalities.
The estate draws on five grands crus and two lieux-dits, from which its nine cuvées are born. Among them, the Grand Cru Hengst holds a special place: it is one of the rare classified terroirs of Alsace where Pinot Noir is authorised, which allows the estate to sign a grand cru red, the Cuvée Rouge d'Alsace.
Organic viticulture, by hand
The move to organic farming, certified since 2010, reflects a way of seeing the craft: respecting the life of the soil and letting the terroir speak. In practice, this means an entirely manual harvest, which allows the grapes to be sorted so that only the finest come in, and deliberately moderate yields, a guarantee of concentration and finesse.
This patient work in the vineyard is the first step towards an honest wine: nothing is fixed in the cellar that has not first been shaped in the plot. It is this mindset that six generations of winegrowers have passed down in Wettolsheim.
In the cellar, gentleness above all
The estate's wines come from a restrained approach to winemaking. Pressing is long and delicate, to extract the juice without ever forcing the fruit. Fermentations take place at low temperature, around 21 °C, to preserve the aromas and finesse that are the hallmark of Alsace grape varieties.
Then comes the ageing: on fine lees, which brings roundness and depth, followed by maturing in foudre, the large traditional oak casks of Alsace, which refine the wine gently without masking the fruit. Each cuvée thus takes the time to reveal its terroir.
The wines of Domaine Aimé Stentz
From grands crus to Crémant, the estate composes a range true to the soul of Alsace. As vintages and availability change with each harvest, the selection shown on Avenue des Vins may vary, here are the signatures that define the house.
Cuvée Rouge d'Alsace
Pinot Noir - red, Grand Cru Hengst
The pride of the estate: a Pinot Noir born on the Grand Cru Hengst, one of only three Alsace grands crus authorised for red wine. A rare cuvée, lovely with white meats and poultry.
The grands crus and lieux-dits
Alsace wines - nine cuvées, five grands crus, two lieux-dits
The heart of the range: Alsace whites that each express their terroir, from granitic to clay-limestone soils. Cuvées to pair with regional cuisine, fish and cheeses.
Crémant d'Alsace
Fine bubbles - Alsace sparkling wine
The house's sparkling wine, ideal as an apéritif or with a festive meal. A celebratory way into the estate's world, organic like the rest of the vines.
The estate signs nine cuvées in all, drawn from its grands crus and lieux-dits. Depending on the harvest and deliveries, Avenue des Vins shows you the cuvées and vintages available to order.
A grand cru red, the estate's signature
In Alsace, only three grands crus allow Pinot Noir. Domaine Aimé Stentz is fortunate to work one of them, the Grand Cru Hengst, for its Cuvée Rouge d'Alsace. It is this rarity, together with classified Roman remains in its plots, that makes Wettolsheim an exceptional terroir and the estate a house apart.

Your questions about Domaine Aimé Stentz
Where is Domaine Aimé Stentz located?
Domaine Aimé Stentz is in Wettolsheim, a winegrowing village in the Haut-Rhin, at the heart of the Alsace vineyard, just south of Colmar. It is a family estate of vignerons récoltants (grower-producers) who tend, harvest and vinify only their own vines.
Who are the winegrowers of Domaine Aimé Stentz?
The estate is a story of transmission: founded in 1919, it took the name of Aimé Stentz, the third generation, in the 1960s. Marc Stentz, the fifth generation, took over in 2019. In 2026, Brice Johner, who had already been leading the winemaking since 2023, took the reins and became the sixth generation to run the house.
Where does the name Domaine Aimé Stentz come from?
The estate carries the first name of Aimé Stentz, the family's third generation. In the 1960s he took over from his father and became the first in the family to harvest and vinify only his own grapes, giving the house its name.
Is Domaine Aimé Stentz organic?
Yes. The estate has been certified organic since 2010. Its 13 hectares of vines are farmed in that spirit, with a 100% manual harvest and deliberately low yields to favour the quality of the fruit.
What wines does Domaine Aimé Stentz make?
The estate produces Alsace wines and Crémant d'Alsace, with nine cuvées drawn from two lieux-dits and five grands crus. It also crafts a Pinot Noir on the Grand Cru Hengst, the Cuvée Rouge d'Alsace, a rarity in the region.
What is the domaine's Cuvée Rouge d'Alsace?
It is a Pinot Noir from the Grand Cru Hengst. Alsace allows Pinot Noir on only three of its grands crus, so being able to sign a red on this classified terroir is both a point of pride and a signature of Domaine Aimé Stentz.
How many grands crus and lieux-dits does the domaine work with?
The estate draws on five grands crus and two lieux-dits in Alsace, from which its nine cuvées come. In Alsace, a grand cru is a defined terroir recognised for its geological identity; a lieu-dit is a named plot whose wine carries the precise imprint of its soil.
How are Domaine Aimé Stentz wines made?
Winemaking is gentle throughout: a long, delicate pressing, low-temperature fermentations at around 21 °C, then ageing on fine lees and maturing in foudre (large traditional oak casks). The aim is to let each terroir and grape variety express itself without being forced.
What are the vineyard soils in Wettolsheim?
Around Wettolsheim, the vineyard sits on a mosaic of clay-limestone, granitic and sandy soils. This geological diversity explains the range of the estate's cuvées, each soil type lending its own signature to the wines.
How long can the domaine's wines be kept?
Alsace whites from grand cru sites, especially Rieslings and wines built for ageing, often benefit from several years in the cellar, where they gain complexity. Crémant and the fruitier cuvées are lovely enjoyed young. When in doubt, the winegrower's advice is the best guide.
What foods pair with Domaine Aimé Stentz wines?
Alsace whites accompany regional cuisine, fish, cheeses and spicy or full-flavoured dishes. The Pinot Noir of the Cuvée Rouge d'Alsace pairs with white meats and poultry, while Crémant d'Alsace is perfect as an apéritif or with a festive meal.
Which Domaine Aimé Stentz wine makes a good gift?
For a gift, the Cuvée Rouge d'Alsace, that rare Pinot Noir born on the Grand Cru Hengst, is a fine gesture for curious wine lovers. A Crémant d'Alsace or a grand cru cuvée will delight those who enjoy fine bubbles and the region's great whites.
