Château Vieux Mougnac: five generations, one shared standard in the Saint-Émilionnais
Château Vieux Mougnac
A family estate of the Grand Saint-Émilionnais since 1870, certified organic (Ecocert) since 2012. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a hectare of Sémillon, horse-drawn soil work, patient ageing. Sincere, vibrant cellaring Bordeaux, up to the legendary micro-cuvees Maria and Michel.
A family saga since 1870. At the heart of the Grand Saint-Émilionnais, the Milhard family has been writing the history of Château Vieux Mougnac since 1870. From Félix and Élisabeth, pioneers of polyculture, to Sylvie and Michel, today surrounded by the 5th and 6th generations, each era has added its stone. A patient trajectory where one passes on plots as much as principles.
A living terroir and preserved biodiversity
The estate sits on silty-clay and clay-sandy soils bathed in an oceanic climate. Here, Merlot and Cabernet Franc dominate, joined by a precious hectare of Sémillon. The vineyard, a mosaic of vines, forests and pastures, is home to a thriving biodiversity: bees, ladybirds, earthworms, hares. A natural richness the family has always preserved through gentle practices and a soil never chemically weeded.

Organic by conviction, tradition by coherence
Long before the labels, the Milhard family already refused industrialisation. In 2012, the château obtained Organic Agriculture (Ecocert) certification. Treatments rely on plant preparations (horsetail, nettle, willow, thyme), greatly reducing the use of copper. Horse-drawn soil work, the house's true signature, aerates, decompacts and favours deep rooting, a guarantee of old, resilient vines. When the weather turns (frost, mildew), the estate adapts without betraying the essential: respect for the living world and healthy wines.
The cellar: precision, patience and lunar rhythm
In the historic cellar, the art of long time is cultivated. The reds (Merlot, Cabernet Franc) are harvested by plot ripeness, with 3-to-4-week macerations in concrete vats, measured pump-overs and fermentations with no added yeast; ageing lasts two winters in concrete, with rackings to the lunar rhythm, then bottling at the estate. The whites (100% Sémillon), made since 1945, follow the vintage, with cold settling and 6-month ageing on fine lees.
The cuvees of Château Vieux Mougnac
From cellaring Bordeaux to the Sémillon white, up to the legendary micro-cuvees from an 80-year-old Merlot plot, each wine tells a story. To discover direct from the estate.
The Red - Bordeaux Supérieur organic
Red - Merlot & Cabernet Franc
The estate's grand vin: harvesting by plot ripeness, 3-to-4-week macerations in concrete vats, fermentations with no added yeast, two-winter ageing. An organic cellaring wine with a noble texture.
The White - Bordeaux Sec
White - 100% Sémillon
Since 1945, the style follows the vintage: dry if the end of summer is cool, medium-sweet if autumn concentrates the berries. Cold settling, 6-month ageing on fine lees for brilliance and length.
Cuvée Jérémie
Red - Merlot from an 80-year-old plot
A tribute micro-cuvee from an 80-year-old Merlot plot: one year in concrete vat then 10 months in French oak barrels. Aromatic power, chiselled tannin grain and saline depth.
Cuvées Maria & Michel
Legendary micro-cuvees - great vintages
The tribute cuvees of the great vintages (Cuvée Maria 2009, Cuvée Michel 2010), from the same old-Merlot plot: the estate's summit, where the terroir speaks and the barrel nuances.
Organic cellaring Bordeaux, direct from the estate
Independent Winegrowers: from vine to glass
A member of the Vignerons Indépendants since 2010, the château advocates a simple, demanding model: to grow, harvest, vinify, age, bottle and welcome, everything done at the property. AB (Ecocert) certification since 2012, strong reduction of inputs, no GMO, controlled sulphites, living soil without herbicide and horse-drawn work: wines true to the vintage, at the table as in the cellar.
