Château Vermont: Boldness, tradition and excellence in the heart of Entre-deux-Mers

In the heart of Entre-deux-Mers, Château Vermont stands out as an emblematic estate, where family history meets a decidedly modern vision of wine. Its 19th-century manor overlooks 40 hectares of vineyards, now cultivated under the Bordeaux Supérieur appellation.

The estate is run by Élisabeth and David Labat, representatives of the fourth generation of winegrowers. Together, they have restored Vermont to its historic status as a Premier Cru of Entre-deux-Mers through bold decisions, major investments and a clear commitment to quality.

A historic vineyard, recognized since the 19th century

The history of Vermont is deeply rooted in time. As early as the late 19th century, the estate is mentioned in the Féret of 1874—the authoritative reference for Bordeaux wines—as one of the major crus of Entre-deux-Mers. A status built on wine quality and the visionary spirit of its successive owners.

Each generation has helped shape the château’s identity: early mechanization, agricultural innovation, independent vinification from the late 1960s, followed by continuous modernization of facilities.

Élisabeth and David Labat: excellence born from boldness

After specialized studies and solid experience in the Bordeaux wine trade, Élisabeth and David Labat have brought new momentum to the estate. Their philosophy is clear: raise the level of excellence at every stage, from vineyard to bottle.

A new vinification and bottling cellar is built, the vineyard is fully restructured parcel by parcel, yields are carefully controlled, and grape variety choices are precise and deliberate. This vision quickly pays off:

  • regular medals,
  • high scores in wine guides,
  • a Grande Cuvée ranked among the Top 15 Bordeaux Supérieur wines by Gault & Millau.

An exceptional terroir shaped by nature

The Château Vermont vineyard is planted in an amphitheater layout on the high limestone plateau of Entre-deux-Mers, between 70 and 100 meters above sea level. Fully drained, it benefits from the combined climatic influence of the Garonne and Dordogne rivers, bringing freshness and consistency.

  • Deep, rich and balanced clay-limestone soils
  • Red vines on clay hillsides with limestone veins, an ideal terroir for Merlot
  • White vines on asteria limestone slabs, a geological extension of Saint-Émilion, offering remarkable expression of Sauvignon

This natural balance allows grapes to reach optimal ripeness, producing wines that are concentrated yet elegant.

Strong and tangible environmental commitments

After years of sustainable practices, Château Vermont obtained HVE level 3 certification in 2019, official recognition of its environmental commitment.

The estate goes further:

  • zero herbicides since 2022, with mechanical soil work and under-vine mowing,
  • soil management that promotes microbial life and biodiversity,
  • an ongoing process to obtain the Bee Friendly label to protect pollinators.

Living among the vines carries a responsibility: to preserve the environment sustainably.

An open and vibrant estate

From the very beginning of their journey, Élisabeth and David wanted Vermont to be a place of sharing and transmission. The estate is open to the public and hosts tastings, exhibitions, events and activities.

In 2018, they created the Feria de Vermont, an oenotourism event that has become a must-attend gathering, blending wine, gastronomy, music and conviviality in the pure tradition of southwestern France.
