Château Petit Val: Saint-Émilion Grand Cru - Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux
North of Saint-Émilion, in a quiet valley where the Gironde light shifts with the hours, lies an estate that carries its secret in its name. Petit Val, the little valley. A setting you won't spot from the road, one you discover by chance or recommendation, and never quite leave behind.
Here, an epicurean, a wine lover and a driven estate manager decided to pursue the quintessential. Without compromise.
History and origins of the estate
Jean-Louis Alloin was not born into wine. A son and grandson of craftsmen of the land with Beaujolais roots, he spent forty years in business, without ever losing the thread that drew him back, inevitably, to the world of wine and vines. When he and his wife Olivia decided to settle in the Bordeaux region, several properties were considered. Château Petit Val imposed itself differently. Something about this valley north of Saint-Émilion felt like a foregone conclusion.
The story could have stopped there, a happy owner, a well-preserved estate. But Jean-Louis Alloin is an epicurean, not a manager. When he crossed paths with David Liorit, a passionate consultant and winemaker, the ambition shifted to another level entirely. Together, they saw in this discreet terroir something the numbers did not yet show: the potential of an outstanding Grand Cru.
David Liorit, Estate Manager
"What I look for is a fine balance between fruit, mineral signature and a suave, beguiling texture." Inventive and bold, David crafts wines that honour this promise, an expression of terroir, never a formula.
The terroir and its unique character
The village of Saint-Émilion is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its cultural landscape. Within this exceptional setting, Château Petit Val occupies a valley to the north of the appellation, a topographical position that gives it its own distinct identity, separate from the limestone plateaux of the commune.
The 12 hectares of the vineyard rest on a mosaic of complementary soils, sandy-clay on the flatlands, clay-limestone on the hillsides, each plot expressing its own personality. It is this diversity, carefully managed by David Liorit through plot-by-plot vinification, that allows complex, layered wines to emerge from a human-scale property.

Working the vines and our commitments
At Château Petit Val, the horse is not a symbol, it is a working tool. Horse-drawn ploughing aerates the soil without compacting it, preserves the clay structure of the plots and removes the need for herbicides entirely. A gesture that runs counter to industrial viticulture, demanding more time and skill, but restoring the land's natural vigour in return.
Biodiversity is cultivated methodically: natural ground cover every other row, planting of fruit trees and hedgerows, installation of beehives whose honey, harvested twice a year, acacia in spring and wildflower at the end of summer , is produced and sold under the Miel du Val label. The estate's ecosystem is treated as a resource, not a backdrop.
Harvests are manual, in small crates, sorted plot by plot then again at the winery. Grapes are chilled immediately after picking, cleaned by viniclean machine, then passed over a "densibaie" density sorting table, a precision selection tool that Château Petit Val was among the first in the Gironde to adopt. What remains at the end of this process is the finest the harvest has to offer, what the team simply calls the caviar of the vintage.
Grape varieties and appellations
The Château Petit Val vineyard is built around Merlot (70%) and Cabernet Franc (30%) for the red Saint-Émilion Grand Cru cuvées, a classic Bordeaux blend that David Liorit approaches with rigorous plot-by-plot precision. Vinifying each parcel separately allows him to select, at blending stage, the lots that best express the character of the vintage.
But Château Petit Val also cultivates singularity. As a nod to Olivia Alloin's Alsatian roots, David Liorit planted Riesling, an absolute first for Saint-Émilion, alongside Chenin Blanc and Malbec vinified in terracotta amphorae. These are bold choices that give rise to confidential, critically praised cuvées, firmly off the beaten track of the appellation.
The wine style and the cuvées
Winemaking at Château Petit Val rests on a simple conviction: fruit must take precedence over technique. Cold pre-fermentation maceration to protect the aromas; temperature-controlled stainless steel vats for the Château Petit Val cuvée; full barrel vinification for the prestige cuvée. And for the most singular expressions, Italian terracotta amphorae, a slower, more porous fermentation that softens the tannins without masking them.
Château Petit Val — Saint-Émilion Grand Cru
70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc · 12 to 18 months in French oak · 55,000 bottles
The signature cuvée. Dark spiced fruit, silky texture, enveloped and velvety tannins, a balance between Bordeaux roundness and the freshness of the valley. A Grand Cru approachable in its youth, whose aromatic persistence grows with each passing year.
Muse du Val - Saint-Émilion Grand Cru - Prestige Cuvée
50% Merlot, 50% Cabernet Franc · Full barrel vinification · 16 to 18 months ageing · 5,000 bottles
The pinnacle of the range. Sourced from the estate's finest clay-limestone hillsides, Muse du Val is vinified entirely in barrel, a long ageing that bestows complexity, unctuousness and a remarkable finish. A wine built for cellaring and great tables alike.
Margo - Saint-Émilion - Cuvée de Cœur
100% Cabernet Franc · Amphorae · No added sulphur · Charitable purpose · 700 bottles
Born of a solidarity initiative in support of Margo, a young woman the Alloin family has been close to since 2016, this confidential cuvée is vinified in terracotta amphorae without added sulphur. Floral and fruity notes, well-integrated tannins, natural freshness throughout. Each vintage is dedicated to a charitable cause.
Orfèvre du Val - Vin de France White
Riesling · Three clay-limestone plots · A tribute to Olivia Alloin's Alsatian heritage
An absolute first for Saint-Émilion. Riesling planted on the estate's clay-limestone slopes develops rare, intense aromas of white flowers and fresh fruit of remarkable freshness. A singular white wine, insolite in the Bordeaux landscape, that transports and surprises at every sip.
Rose du Val - Bordeaux Rosé
50% Merlot, 50% Cabernet Franc · Direct pressing · Stainless steel ageing · 1,800 bottles + 600 magnums
Crafted in the style of the finest Provence rosés, but with Bordeaux roundness as its signature. Pale, luminous robe; a nose of fresh red fruits and blossom; a velvety palate of quince and floral notes, with a long and fresh finish. The Bordeaux rosé you did not expect to find here.

What you will only find at Château Petit Val
The only Riesling in Saint-Émilion. Planting Riesling in Bordeaux is an audacity few winemakers would attempt. David Liorit did, and the result, the Orfèvre du Val cuvée, is a gustatory curiosity that travels as well as it tells a story. An exceptional white wine, classified as Vin de France, that fits into no predefined category.
An HVE-certified vineyard, worked by horse. The High Environmental Value certification is not a communication label here, it is the visible outcome of daily horse-drawn ploughing, a zero-herbicide policy and a biodiversity programme that commits the estate for the long term.
Amphorae in the Bordeaux cellars. The vinification of Malbec and the Margo cuvée in Italian terracotta amphorae is a return to the origins of winemaking, gentler, slower, more respectful of the fruit. A practice Château Petit Val adopted well before it became fashionable.
A charitable cuvée, every year. Margo, 700 bottles, no added sulphur, is dedicated each vintage to a solidarity cause chosen by the Alloin family. A wine that has a reason to exist beyond the glass.

Château Petit Val produces exclusively under the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation, with the stated ambition of one day achieving Grand Cru Classé status.
Why buy Château Petit Val wines directly, with no middleman ?
Because every bottle leaves directly from the estate, in the exact storage conditions maintained by David Liorit's team. No intermediate warehouse, no break in the cold chain.
