Château Ogier de Gourgue – The natural elegance of Côtes de Bordeaux

A vineyard tended like a garden. Just 12 km southeast of Bordeaux, in Saint-Caprais-de-Bordeaux, Château Ogier de Gourgue sits atop a plateau overlooking the Côtes de Bordeaux, with sweeping views toward the canton of La Brède. The estate covers 8 hectares, including 5 hectares of contiguous vines planted on well-drained clay-limestone and clay-gravel slopes. This geological mosaic gives each cuvée a mineral, elegant signature—an authentic reflection of this privileged terroir.

An opening carved into the barrel cellar wall reveals the subsoil four meters down: a bed of gravel and fine clays that plays a key role in grape concentration and ripeness.

Demanding, respectful organic farming

The château embarked on organic conversion in 2009 and released its first certified-organic vintage in 2012—a milestone for an estate committed to quality, sustainability, and sincerity.

Under the direction of Claire Vincent, vineyard work follows classic Bordeaux tradition with constant attention to the environment:

  • Natural protection using copper and sulfur, at half the standard organic doses.
  • Plant teas and decoctions (horsetail, nettle, willow) to boost vine vitality and natural defenses.
  • Green manures (rye, oats, legumes) to aerate soils and naturally enrich them.
  • On-site composted manure to nourish the soil without disrupting its ecosystem.
  • Canopy management to ensure optimal airflow and perfect grape ripeness.

No synthetic products are used, and annual inspections are carried out by Ecocert, an independent body guaranteeing compliance with organic standards.

Artisanal know-how in service of the fruit

The blend is dominated by 60% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon—classic Bordeaux identity with a modern twist in yield management. Deliberately held to 30 hl/ha, yields deliver concentrated, healthy, aromatic grapes.

Winemaking aims for balance: preserve fruit freshness while expressing terroir depth. The wines are precisely aged in French oak barrels, gaining complexity, finesse, and length on the palate.
