Château Maison Neuve - Gironde wines by Alexia Eymas, a winegrower above the estuary, for four generations

Bordeaux wines - Saint-Palais, banks of the Gironde estuary (33)

Château Maison Neuve is 45 hectares in a single block on the slopes of Saint-Palais, in the north of the Gironde, run by Alexia Eymas, a fourth-generation winegrower. Merlot, cabernet sauvignon, malbec and sauvignon give reds, whites and rosés with character, farmed in sustainable viticulture, to discover direct on Avenue des Vins.

Four generations ago, a great-grandmother planted vines on the slopes of Saint-Palais. Today it is Alexia Eymas who runs the estate, after studying sociology and journalism, she chose a return to the land, trained in Bordeaux and in Margaux, then created her own range. Forty-five hectares in a single block above the Gironde estuary, long gentle macerations, wines with a different character in every vintage. A story of women and terroir, to discover direct on Avenue des Vins.

Alexia Eymas, a fourth generation of women winegrowers

At Château Maison Neuve, the vine passes down the female line. It was Alexia's great-grandmother who first began to farm these slopes. Three generations later, Alexia Eymas took up the torch after her mother, adding her own mark: the creation of a range of wines and the commercial opening of the estate.

Her path was far from written, though. After studying sociology, journalism and political science, she chose to return to the values of the land, in her adopted region, Aquitaine. She trained at the ENITA in Bordeaux and learnt the craft on a Margaux property, then in a cooperative cellar to grasp the full diversity of the surrounding terroirs.

She sums up her craft simply: to draw out the best of her terroir, adapt it to each year's climate and produce wines with a unique character in every vintage. She works today with five employees, from pruning the vine to selling the bottles.

A terroir of slopes above the Gironde estuary

The estate lies in Saint-Palais, a small commune in the north of the Gironde, about 45 minutes north of Bordeaux, where the estuary widens towards the ocean. The 45 hectares, in a single block, sit at 92 metres of altitude on the slopes. This position offers fine protection against weather hazards, notably frost, and benefits from the tempering influence of the estuary and of the classified Livenne river, which runs through the property.

Each grape finds its soil here. The reds, merlot, cabernet sauvignon and malbec, sit on the clay-limestone terroirs of the slopes, suited to structure and depth. Sauvignon, the estate's only white grape, occupies silty boulbènes, ideal for drawing out fine, subtle aromas.

Long macerations for silky wines

In the cellar, everything is designed to preserve the fruit. The harvest is picked with a latest-generation sorting table; on arrival, the first "coarse" juices are set aside before crushing and filling the stainless-steel tanks. Fermentation takes place at controlled temperature, for a gentle transformation, and the extraction of colour and tannins is guided by a turbo-pigeur, a tool that respects the grape juice.

The house signature is long, gentle macerations, over forty days, that give wines both tannic and silky. Pressing, on a horizontal basket press, stays delicate throughout. The blends take shape as the wines are built, and ageing continues for 12 to 24 months depending on the style sought: fruity wine, intense wine, refined and silky wine, or a cuvée with no added sulphur.

This is not an organic certification, but a terroir-respectful approach. The estate also makes a cuvée with no added sulphur.

After precision sorting, the grapes ferment in stainless-steel tanks at controlled temperature. Extraction is done gently with a turbo-pigeur, with long macerations of over 40 days for wines both tannic and silky. Pressing is on a horizontal basket press, and ageing lasts 12 to 24 months depending on each cuvée's style.
