Château Livran (Médoc): 700 Years of History, an Exceptional Terroir and Wines of Character

A Médoc Heritage Forged Since 1280. In the heart of Saint-Germain-d’Esteuil, Château Livran embodies seven centuries of history. From the brothers Arnaud and Béraud de Got (with Bertrand becoming Pope Clement V) to the troubled times of both World Wars — a field hospital in 1914–18, a resistance stronghold in 1939–45 — the estate has always been a living place. This heritage is still visible today in the grand 3,000 m² building surrounded by woods and vines.

The Revival Driven by the Michon Family

Since 2013, Edwige Lurton Michon (daughter of Lucien Lurton) and Olivier Michon have brought new momentum:

  • Redesigned winery and concrete vats for precise fermentations,
  • Replanting plan and meticulous plot management,
  • Viticultural program focused on soil preservation and the gradual move toward biodynamics (gentle soil work, progressive elimination of herbicides).

Objective: to express the diversity of the terroir by mastering every stage, from vineyard to cellar, while respecting natural and human resources.

Médoc Terroir & Maritime Climate: Natural Balance

Rooted in clay-limestone soils with limestone outcrops, the vineyard benefits from steady water supply under the influence of the ocean. The result: uniform ripeness of skins and tannins, a fresh and deep framework — ideal for age-worthy and expressive Médoc wines.

Responsible Vineyard & Virtuous Innovations

  • Detailed soil studies and vintage-specific plot work,
  • Natural treatments and respect for cycles,
  • Canadian wells to keep the cellar at a stable temperature (~15 °C) without unnecessary energy use,
  • Vignalex: wastewater treatment through composting shredded vine shoots (nothing is wasted, everything is transformed).

This approach is supported by rigorous technical guidance (advice from Eric Boissenot, biodynamic support from Corinne Comme).

The Livran Signature: Precision, Purity, Elegance

The estate produces around 150,000 bottles per year:

  • Château Livran – Cru Bourgeois (approx. 50%)
  • Sources de Livran (second wine, approx. 50%)

Château Livran (Médoc)

  • Blend: Merlot ~60% – Cabernet Sauvignon ~40%
  • Aging: 12–18 months (≈30% new oak)
  • Style: ripe black fruit, Médoc freshness, finely chiseled tannins, long finish
  • Aging Potential: up to 10 years
  • Pairings: red meats, roasted poultry, aged cheeses

Sources de Livran

  • Blend: Cabernet Sauvignon ~60% – Merlot ~40%
  • Aging: concrete vats
  • Style: approachable, juicy, spicy, immediate pleasure
  • Aging Potential: 5–7 years
  • Pairings: fine charcuterie, grilled dishes, bistro cuisine

Blanc de Livran: Boldness in “Vins de France”

Launched in 2022 on 1 ha of clay soil over limestone bedrock, this singular cuvée (hand-harvested in three passes, including late harvest) combines 99% Chenin and 1% Chardonnay — a first in the Médoc. A precise wine, delicately tender, with notes of white fruit, fine honey, and wet stone. Presented in a wooden case (estate exclusive).

A Committed Team, a Spirit of Transmission

From vineyard management (Cyrielle Guiraud) to the cellar (Larissa Schapitz), from young talents trained on-site to the historical know-how (Evelyne, 30 years at the estate), teamwork ensures a consistent style. The vineyard (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc) is cared for plot by plot to produce expressive and harmonious wines.
