Château Léognan: the soul of a historic estate in the heart of the Graves

South of Bordeaux, where pine trees mingle with vines and sunlight slides over warm gravel, Château Léognan unfolds its long history. It all began in the 17th century, when the estate was still a farm belonging to the Church. A true new chapter opened in the early 2000s, when the château’s grapes were vinified on-site for the first time.

In 2007, Chantal and Philippe Miecaze fell in love with this unique place. Their ambition was both simple and immense: reveal Léognan’s hidden potential without ever betraying its identity. Today, thanks to them, the estate has become a refined, confidential address, renowned for the elegance of its wines and the beauty of its setting.

A Graves terroir shaped by nature

Planted in 1989 by the neighbouring Domaine de Chevalier, the vineyard covers 6 hectares of warm gravel bordered by forest and softened by a natural pond. This unique microclimate encourages slow ripening, a signature of the great Graves wines: depth, finesse and balance.

The estate grows mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot — varietals that thrive on these draining soils supported by rich biodiversity.

The domain is committed to a sustainable approach and is certified HVE Level 4.

A living heritage told through its stones

Arriving at Château Léognan, one immediately feels the weight of history.

The 17th-century longhouse, once inhabited by Saint-Jean monks, now hosts the reception area and boutique. In the 19th century, the Seurin family transformed the estate: building the château, the Pavilion, the Orangery… and above all, the Saint-Mathieu chapel, erected by Emma Seurin in memory of her late husband.

This chapel holds a unique relic: a love letter from Emma, placed beneath the consecration stone. Rediscovered in 2009, it allowed the chapel to be reconsecrated and remains open today for weddings and ceremonies.

Every building, pathway and vine carries the imprint of an era and a gesture of devotion.

A renaissance driven by Philippe and Chantal Miecaze

The modern story of Léognan began with a meeting and a shared dream. After a successful career in medical imaging, Philippe and Chantal decided to change their lives and embrace the world of wine. Their conviction was absolute: their future would be viticulture, and this estate would become their new mission.

In 2007, they purchased the château, revived the vineyard, built a winery and renovated the property. Everything happened quickly — yet everything was done with infinite patience.

Within a few years, Miecaze-crafted wines impressed critics and earned medals in national and international competitions.

A must-visit destination for wine tourism

Today, Château Léognan is more than a vineyard: it is a fully immersive experience in the heart of Pessac-Léognan.
