Château Haut-Guiraud, a family-run, organic Côtes de Bourg on the right bank

Château Haut-Guiraud - AOC Côtes de Bourg

Château Haut-Guiraud is a family estate in the Côtes de Bourg appellation, at Saint-Ciers-de-Canesse, on the right bank of Bordeaux. Run by the Bonnet family since 1876, five generations of winegrowers and coopers, it grows merlot and the cabernets organically on clay-limestone soils, and is classified Cru Bourgeois of the Côtes de Bourg. Its reds for the cellar (Péché du Roy, La Compagnonne), its claret and its rosé are available direct on Avenue des Vins.

On the hillsides of Bourg, above the Gironde estuary and facing the Médoc, the Bonnet family has tended the same land since 1876. Five generations of winegrowers, and coopers by training, craft honest Côtes de Bourg here, today farmed organically: reds for the cellar classified Cru Bourgeois, a generous claret and a fresh rosé. Available direct on Avenue des Vins.

Five generations of the Bonnet family since 1876

Château Haut-Guiraud is one of the historic properties of the right bank: its winegrowing origins go back, according to the estate's archives, to 1630, and its present château was built in 1891 from local limestone. Since 1876, five generations of the Bonnet family have followed one another in the vines and the cellar, winegrowers and coopers by training, for whom working wood and working wine go hand in hand.

Jean Bonnet acquired the vineyard in 1950; his son Christophe Bonnet took over in 1987 and runs the estate today, which has remained one of the few wholly family-owned properties of the Côtes de Bourg. Château Haut-Guiraud is classified Cru Bourgeois of the Côtes de Bourg, the appellation's highest historic distinction.

Winegrowers and coopers, from father to son

The Bonnet family are winegrowers and coopers by training. This double culture, the vine and the wood, shows in measured ageing, where the barrel serves the fruit without ever crushing it, and in a standard passed down from generation to generation for almost a hundred and fifty years.

Côtes de Bourg, the right-bank hillsides facing the Médoc

The estate lies at Saint-Ciers-de-Canesse, in the heart of the Côtes de Bourg, on the right bank of Bordeaux. This is a land of rolling hillsides overlooking the Gironde estuary and the Dordogne, facing the Médoc. The vines sit on clay-limestone soils, a terroir that gives merlot its flesh and roundness, and the wines their freshness.

The grape mix is typical of the right bank: merlot leads, rounded out with cabernet sauvignon and, on some cuvees, malbec. The best-exposed plots, due south or south-west, are kept for the cuvees built to age.

Château Haut-Guiraud (Côtes de Bourg)

AOC Côtes de Bourg - right bank, Gironde estuary

A family estate since 1876, farmed organically, classified Cru Bourgeois, for reds of merlot and the cabernets, a claret and a rosé.

Organic, respectful winegrowing

Château Haut-Guiraud converted its vineyard to organic farming and now works in certified organic (AB), alongside a High Environmental Value approach. The wines are certified vegan, and the estate is committed to a corporate social responsibility (CSR) process. In the vines, leaf-thinning and green harvesting open up the bunches and bring them to full ripeness.

The estate has invested in high-precision harvesting: a latest-generation harvester with on-board sorting, followed by optical sorting in the cellar, to keep only the best grapes. On the Péché du Roy cuvee, the wine is not even sulphured before the end of malolactic fermentation, to let the fruit express itself as purely as possible.

Gentle winemaking and ageing in barrel

In the cellar, winemaking is handled with restraint to respect the grapes: low-temperature fermentations, gentle pump-overs to avoid over-extraction, and a search for balance rather than power. Each variety ferments at its own pace before blending.

Ageing is tailored to each wine. The Péché du Roy cuvee for the cellar spends fourteen months in new oak barrels, true to the house's cooperage culture, while the fruitier cuvees are aged in vat to preserve their brightness. The claret and the rosé are made for freshness, to drink in their youth.

Cru Bourgeois and award-winning cuvees

Château Haut-Guiraud is classified Cru Bourgeois of the Côtes de Bourg, the appellation's highest historic distinction. Its cuvees are regularly noticed in competitions: the Péché du Roy and La Compagnonne have both taken gold at the Challenge International du Vin, and the Péché du Roy has also been awarded at the Concours des Féminalise. The awards vary by vintage; find those of the wines offered on the estate's page.

Rosé - the fruit-driven rosé

Rosé · AOC Bordeaux · merlot 100%
