North of Portets, Château de L'Hospital stands out as much for its architecture as for its exceptional vineyard. Built between 1787 and 1789 by Victor Louis, creator of the Grand Théâtre of Bordeaux, this estate was long a country home for the Bordeaux nobility. After several centuries of history and a period of abandonment, the Battistella family took over the reins in 2012, undertaking a total seven-year renovation. Today classified a historic monument, the chateau embodies a successful meeting of tradition, elegance and sustainability.
An organic vineyard, a pioneer in the Graves
From their arrival, the Battistella family completely rethought the vineyard: thirty hectares grubbed up, soils regenerated, reasoned replanting. The result: in 2017, Château de L'Hospital became the first estate certified organic in the Graves appellation. The terroir, made of deep gravel and sandy soils, is cradled by the Garonne, giving the estate's reds, whites and rosés a natural freshness and a rare aromatic finesse. Here, nature guides every gesture: no pesticides, mechanical weeding, green manure to nourish the soils and protected biodiversity, where the vines coexist with bats, bees and typhlodromes.
A viticulture respectful of living systems
The wines are made with few sulfites, well below the organic thresholds, and aged in concrete vats or 300 L barrels, to preserve the fruit, purity and structure. Between restored heritage, environmental commitment and oenological creativity, Château de L'Hospital embodies the new generation of Bordeaux wines: sincere, alive and deeply rooted in its time.
