A Heritage Between Art and Nature. North of Portets, Château de L’Hospital stands out for both its architecture and its exceptional vineyard. Built between 1787 and 1789 by Victor Louis, the architect of Bordeaux’s Grand Théâtre, this estate was once a countryside retreat for Bordeaux’s nobility. After centuries of history and years of neglect, the Battistella family took over in 2012 and undertook a full seven-year restoration. Now listed as a historical monument, the château embodies the perfect harmony between tradition, elegance, and sustainability.

A Pioneer Organic Vineyard in the Graves

From the very beginning, the Battistella family reimagined the entire vineyard: thirty hectares were uprooted, the soils regenerated, and the replanting carefully planned. The result came in 2017, when Château de L’Hospital became the first certified organic estate in the Graves appellation. The terroir, composed of deep gravel and sandy soils shaped by the Garonne River, gives the estate’s red, white, and rosé wines their natural freshness and rare aromatic finesse.

Viticulture in Harmony with Life

Here, nature dictates every move: no pesticides, mechanical weeding, green manures to nourish the soil, and a thriving biodiversity. The vines coexist with bats, bees, and predatory mites — natural allies against vineyard pests. The wines are crafted with minimal sulfites, well below organic standards, and aged in concrete vats or 300-liter barrels to preserve fruit, purity, and structure.
