Domaine de la Forteresse de Berrye, the soul of Saumur organic wines
Domaine de la Forteresse de Berrye
A 13-hectare vineyard on the tuffeau slopes of Berrie, south of Saumur (Loire Valley). Certified organic since 2024. Chenin, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, vinified in an ancestral troglodytic cellar.
On the Turonian slopes of the village of Berrie, south of Saumur, rises a place out of time: the Domaine de la Forteresse de Berrye. Between medieval heritage and an exceptional terroir, this 13-hectare vineyard cultivates the art of wine with respect and passion. Here, tuffeau, the emblematic stone of the Loire, gives the wines a mineral purity and a unique freshness. For more than eight centuries, the vine has shaped the landscapes of Berrie.
An exceptional terroir at the heart of the Saumurois
Clinging to the south and south-west slopes, the vineyard rests on clay-sandy and clay-limestone soils, known as white earths, typical of white Anjou. The tuffeau chalk, a porous and living stone, ensures natural drainage and a slow ripening of the grapes. This unique terroir, bathed in light, gives the wines a rare verticality and mineral tension, characteristic of the great wines of Saumur. Chenin, king of the Saumurois, expresses all its nobility here; Cabernet Franc, fine and vibrant, reveals red fruits, spices and violet; Cabernet Sauvignon, more structured, brings concentration and depth on a racy limestone frame.
An organic and living viticulture
Since 2024, the estate is certified organic, a recognition of work carried out for several years with respect for living systems. Under the direction of Gilles, an agronomist and agricultural engineer, biodiversity is at the heart of the project: agroforestry with over 1,500 trees and shrubs planted (walnut, almond), beekeeping with around ten hives, eco-grazing by a flock of Ouessant sheep, permaculture and soil preservation. The troglodytic cellars, sheltering colonies of bats, bear witness to this natural symbiosis.

A troglodytic cellar, an ancestral know-how
The wines are vinified at the very heart of the chateau, in an ancestral troglodytic cellar carved into the tuffeau. This natural place, at a constant temperature, favours a slow, harmonious evolution of the cuvees, with respect for the fruit and time. The estate continues a tradition of more than eight centuries while embracing a modern approach: organic farming, long ageing, low intervention in the cellar and gentle winemaking. Aged slowly in the troglodytic galleries, the wines gain in complexity and depth, to deliver living, sincere cuvees. An ancestral know-how enhanced by a contemporary vision of wine.
