Château d’Agel: The Soul of the Minervois in the Heart of the Cesse Valley
Located at the foot of the Montagne Noire, in the heart of the Minervois and the Haut-Languedoc Regional Natural Park, Château d’Agel embodies the strength of a unique terroir and the commitment of passionate winegrowers. The estate covers 36 hectares, with emblematic plots such as Les Crozes and the Plateau de Cazelles, where soils rich in pebbles, sandstone and clay offer remarkable diversity, ideal for producing great red, white and rosé wines of the Languedoc.
Exceptional Terroirs: Les Crozes and the Plateau de Cazelles
Les Crozes, located at 100 metres above sea level, rest on soils of rolled pebbles, sandstone and clay. This geological mosaic promotes powerful, aromatic grapes.
The Plateau de Cazelles, perched at 180 metres, benefits from a stony, clay-limestone soil, covered with white stones that return heat at night. The result: perfectly balanced grapes of great intensity.
These terroirs shape expressive wines, authentic reflections of the Cesse Valley.
A Mediterranean Grape Palette for Wines of Character
The planting scheme has been designed to reveal the potential of the Minervois:
- Reds: Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan, Grenache and Cinsault.
- Whites: Vermentino, Grenache Blanc, Maccabeu, Roussanne and Muscat Petit Grains.
Each variety brings its complexity, balance and elegance to the wines of Château d’Agel.
History of Château d’Agel: Between Heritage and Passion
The village of Agel, dominated by its 12th-century medieval château, is the birthplace of this historic estate. After belonging to the Écal family for two centuries, the vineyard was taken over and developed by Pierre Fil in the 1960s. In 2003, a new, passionate team gave the estate a second wind, combining viticultural traditions with modern techniques.
Sustainable and Respectful Viticulture
Respect for nature is at the heart of Château d’Agel’s philosophy:
- HVE3 certification (High Environmental Value, level 3).
- Progressive conversion to organic farming.
- Elimination of herbicides in favour of soil cultivation.
- Production of vegan wines, using plant-based fining agents for clarification.
This sustainable approach guarantees healthy wines, respectful of the environment and true to the identity of the terroir.
Winemaking: Tradition and Innovation
Harvesting, carried out by hand on some plots, is followed by parcel-by-parcel vinification that highlights each grape variety. Depending on the cuvée, ageing is done in stainless steel tanks, concrete or oak barrels for the most ambitious reds. This expertise allows the production of wines that combine freshness, balance and aromatic depth.
