Champagne Romain Billette: Five Generations of History in the Côte des Bar

The pursuit of excellence, passed down from father to son. For over 100 years, our family has carried on a unique winemaking tradition in Urville, in the heart of the Côte des Bar. Starting with just a few ares of vines cultivated by Charles Bogé and later his son Gaston, the family journey truly began in 1948, when Yvonne and Lucien Billette officially founded the estate. Together with their sons Daniel and Robert, they gradually expanded the vineyard, making it their main activity.

Today, Romain Billette, the fifth generation, continues this legacy with passion. After working with prestigious Champagne Houses, he decided in 2019 to craft and bottle his own cuvées at the estate.

A vineyard rooted in the Côte des Bar

The estate covers nearly 8 hectares of vines planted on clay-limestone soils rich in Kimmeridgian and Portlandian marl. These lands, shaped by time and rivers, bring remarkable character to the grape varieties grown:

  • Pinot Noir (80%): power and structure, with notes of red fruits.
  • Chardonnay (10%): freshness, finesse, and floral elegance.
  • Pinot Blanc (3%): lightness, freshness, and personality.
  • Pinot Meunier 7%: roundness and fruitiness, ideal for Rosé de Saignée.

Each harvest is vinified separately to reveal the precise expression of each plot.

A strong commitment to nature and biodiversity

Romain practices sustainable viticulture, limiting inputs and encouraging natural balance. Cover cropping, mechanical soil work, and the presence of beehives help enhance biodiversity within the vineyard.

The estate is certified HVE (High Environmental Value), and the Chardonnay are in organic and the Pinot Blanc plots are in organic conversion paving the way for a future organic Blanc de Blancs Champagne.

Enhancing the fruit through oak barrel aging

Staying true to his philosophy, Romain has made the bold choice to vinify and age all his cuvées in oak barrels sourced from local forests (Argonne, Montagne de Reims, and soon Urville). This six-month aging process brings a unique aromatic complexity, creating silky, gourmet wines where oak enhances the fruit and terroir expression.

The cuvées of Champagne Romain Billette

  • "L’Éveil des Sens": bright, with floral, toasty, and fruity notes.
  • "Sur le Bois": full-bodied and generous, marked by rich woody and toasted aromas.
  • "Sur la Finesse" (Blanc de Blancs, in organic conversion): delicate and round, revealing floral and exotic fruit notes with a beautiful minerality.
  • "La Richesse du Fruit" (Rosé de Saignée): intense and charming, with raspberry, blackcurrant, and violet aromas.
  • Ratafia de Champagne: indulgent, with candied fruit and sweet spice notes, perfect as an aperitif or for gourmet pairings.

A vision, a style, a signature

Each bottle embodies the soul of the Côte des Bar, respect for nature, and the expertise passed down through generations. With the support of his wife Lucie, Romain is writing a new chapter in the family story, bringing a strong and contemporary identity to his champagnes.
