Champagne Moutaux: A Family Legacy in the Heart of the Côte des Bar

Located in Bligny, in the Aube department, Champagne Moutaux is a family-run estate of independent winegrowers for several generations. Nestled between Bar-sur-Aube and Bar-sur-Seine, our estate stands out through a strong commitment to sustainable viticulture, the passing down of artisanal expertise, and champagnes crafted entirely on-site, from vine to bottle.

A Unique Terroir and Respectful Vineyard Practices

Our 13-hectare vineyard is spread across several slopes with diverse orientations (south, southeast, and east), benefiting from the distinctive Kimmeridgian clay-limestone soils typical of the Côte des Bar. This unique terroir allows us to grow all four major Champagne grape varieties: Pinot Noir (the majority), Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier, and Pinot Blanc.

Each plot is carefully tended throughout the seasons with manual work: pruning, debudding, leaf thinning, trellising, and hand harvesting only. No herbicides or insecticides are used, and synthetic fungicides are applied only when absolutely necessary.

Certified and Eco-Responsible Viticulture

Our estate follows a strong environmental approach: certified Terra Vitis since 2012 and High Environmental Value (HVE) since 2018. We promote biodiversity (planting hedges, natural grass cover, no insecticides) and practice only mechanical weeding.

Our methods respect the health of both the vines and the people working in them, while ensuring healthy, expressive grapes free from undesirable residues.

Estate Winemaking: Authenticity and Precision

The grapes are gently pressed whole in our pneumatic press. The first juices, called the “cuvée”, are noble and elegant, while the “tailles” bring fruitier, more generous notes. Each grape variety and plot is vinified separately in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve their aromatic identity.

Our blends are crafted with care and precision, in collaboration with our oenologist, to ensure consistent quality, balance, and true terroir expression.

Patiently Aged Cuvées

Our champagnes age in our cellars for a minimum of 24 months, and up to over 10 years for some cuvées. This extended maturation adds complexity and finesse to the wines. Riddling is done manually on traditional racks or with gyropalettes, followed by disgorging and final dosage adjustment (brut, extra brut, brut nature, etc.).

A Family Story of Independent Winemakers

The estate's story began with Jean-Claude Moutaux, passionate about vines since childhood. In 1973, he realized his dream by creating his own champagnes. With his wife Odette and later their son Francis, they founded Champagne Moutaux, which has since grown into a fully-fledged family estate. Since the 2000s, the legacy has continued with Christine, Francis’s sister, and her husband, then passed on to the next generation: Chloé, Florian, Jennifer, and Pierre, who bring a modern touch while honoring traditions.

Signature Cuvées and Strong Commitments

Réserve Brut: the first historic cuvée, vinified in 1973.

Val de Beauregard: aged nearly 10 years on lees, offering depth and elegance.

Blanc de Noirs: 100% Pinot Noir, expressive and terroir-driven.

Blanc de Blancs: 100% Chardonnay, refined, mineral, and delicate.

Un Brin de Nature: 100% Pinot Meunier, brut nature, the first cuvée from the new generation.

Our Values: Independence, Heritage, and Quality

Since 2011, we have proudly been part of the Independent Winegrowers Federation, a true sign of commitment: we grow our grapes, vinify our champagnes, and sell them directly.

Our guiding principles are clear:

Welcome our visitors with authenticity,

Work with respect for nature and people,

Promote a responsible, sincere, and sustainable Champagne.

As a certified Vignobles & Découvertes estate, we invite you to discover our vineyard, our terroir, and our passion — and to taste champagnes that tell a true story.
