Champagne Michel Hoerter: a family Champagne house guided by respect for nature

Champagne Michel Hoerter is first and foremost a family story deeply rooted in the Marne Valley. For four generations, the vine has been passed down as a living heritage, shaped by time, observation, and down-to-earth common sense. Each generation has added its own chapter without ever breaking the bond with the land. Today, Jean-Philippe Hoerter carries this legacy forward alongside his wife Valérie, driven by a clear vision: to craft sincere, transparent Champagnes that stay true to their origins and bring together both seasoned enthusiasts and curious newcomers in search of genuine discoveries.

A distinctive vineyard in the heart of the Marne Valley

The vineyard covers around 9 hectares, all located in Essômes-sur-Marne, in the western part of the Marne Valley. The vines thrive on clay-limestone soils on the upper slopes and clay-sandy soils lower down, offering a complementary range of expressions. Pinot Meunier, the emblematic grape variety of the area, plays a central role. It is complemented by Pinot Noir for structure and Chardonnay for finesse and freshness. Some parcels date back to 1936, with an average vine age of 40 years, ensuring natural concentration and impressive aromatic depth.

Sustainable, consistent and certified viticulture

At Champagne Michel Hoerter, respect for nature is not a recent trend. It has guided the estate’s work for over 20 years. The property is now certified HVE (High Environmental Value) and VDC (Sustainable Viticulture in Champagne), two certifications that reflect a concrete commitment to biodiversity and long-term sustainability. Controlled grass cover, mechanical weed control, carefully managed leaf removal and natural organic inputs are all used to preserve soil balance and vine vitality, allowing the terroir to express itself fully, without artifice.

Balanced, generous and approachable Champagnes

In the cellar, the philosophy remains unchanged: let the grapes speak, without forcing them. Vinifications are precise and respectful of the fruit, with a constant search for balance between freshness, roundness and elegance. The Michel Hoerter style can be recognised through Champagnes that are:

  • expressive and fruit-forward
  • fresh without austerity
  • generous without heaviness

These cuvées are designed for immediate pleasure, while also pairing beautifully with food, from aperitif moments to more gastronomic dishes.

Ranges inspired by grape variety and time

The house expresses its expertise through two main signatures:

  • Les Muses, a range inspired by grape varieties, including a three-grape blend, a blanc de noirs, a blended rosé and a vintage cuvée
  • Intuition, dedicated exclusively to vintage Champagnes, true snapshots of a specific year and terroir

Some cuvées are partially aged in oak barrels, others crafted as single-varietal wines or rosé de saignée, always with the same focus on precision and authenticity.

An independent house looking to the future

Champagne Michel Hoerter moves forward with consistency, far from industrial standards. An independent, family-run house that favours quality over quantity, human relationships over mass distribution, and the honest expression of terroir over ready-made formulas. These are Champagnes made to be shared, understood and enjoyed, without unnecessary jargon.

What makes a Pinot Meunier–dominated Champagne different from other Champagne styles, and why does it appeal so strongly to both connoisseurs and first-time Champagne drinkers ?
