A family history rooted in the vine

The adventure begins in the 1930s, with the gradual acquisition of vines around Epernay, then on the Massif de Saint-Thierry, in the heart of the Montagne de Reims. It is Rene Merat, passionate about viticulture since his teenage years, who gave a decisive impulse to the estate in the 1980s. In 1992, his son Luc created his own brand and founded the Champagne Luc Merat House, marking the beginning of a new generation of independent winegrowers. Today, Valentine, one of Luc's daughters, has joined the estate, ensuring the continuity and the future of a know-how handed down over three generations.

An exceptional terroir: the Montagne de Reims and the Massif de Saint-Thierry

The estate extends over about 8 hectares spread across the Massif de Saint-Thierry, the Montagne de Reims and the Vallee de l'Ardre. These terroirs, renowned for their chalky and clay-limestone soil, offer ideal conditions for the cultivation of Pinot Noir, the king grape of the Montagne de Reims, but also of Meunier and Chardonnay. The village of Merfy, the central point of the estate, is located 15 km from Reims: this preserved, confidential area gives the House's champagnes a unique style, between finesse, balance and intensity.

A mastered winemaking, from the vine to the bottle

Since 2008, Luc Merat has equipped the estate with its own pressing centre in Merfy. This complete autonomy makes it possible to vinify each plot according to its identity, adapting the techniques to the specificities of each harvest. The modern facilities (two presses, a stainless-steel vat room, an ageing cellar and a labelling area) allow precise work, respecting the rhythm of the wines and their natural evolution. Faithful to its values, the Merat family is committed to a sustainable, reasoned viticulture, limiting inputs and favouring biodiversity.
