Champagne Lacuisse Frères: Premier Cru of Sermiers, Montagne de Reims

Champagne Lacuisse Frères

Premier Cru Champagne in Sermiers, at the heart of the Montagne de Reims. 17 hectares, 70% Pinot Meunier, HVE certified. The Lacuisse family, growers in Sermiers.

A few metres beneath Sermiers lie marine shells 45 million years old. It is on this rare fossil subsoil, marls, clays and siliceous sands inherited from the ancient seabeds of Champagne, that the Lacuisse family farms its 17 hectares of Premier Cru vines. A singular geological terroir, a family rooted in Sermiers for over a century, and Champagnes that resemble no others, to discover direct on Avenue des Vins.

At Sermiers, in the heart of the Montagne de Reims, the Lacuisse Frères house makes its Premier Cru Champagnes in two families: a Classique range, accessible and convivial, and a Premium Nature collection, with no sulfur added at disgorgement, made Brut Nature (no dosage), with a mineral signature. All on a blend led 70% by Pinot Meunier, and a subsoil of clays and siliceous sands singular in the Champagne vineyard.

Vines recorded as far back as 850, a family for over a century

These lands carry a long memory: archives record vines at Sermiers as far back as the year 850. The Cosson farm, at the heart of today's vineyard, appears on maps as early as 1786, surrounded by the plots that still form the core of the estate: Cosson, Pré de Reims, Gillemandes, Quartiers, Presles.

It was in the early 20th century that Julien Lacuisse and his sons gave this land its winegrowing identity, developing the estate on the Premier Cru slopes of Sermiers. Generation after generation, the vineyard grew and the know-how was refined, up to today's 17 hectares and a range that has built the house's reputation.

The Lacuisse philosophy

Patient, sincere Champagnes. At least 4 years of cellar ageing, and up to nearly 8 for some cuvées, far beyond the legal minimum. A Premium Nature collection with no sulfur added at disgorgement (Brut Nature), to let the terroir speak unadorned. Three certifications, HVE, Sustainable Viticulture in Champagne, the Vignobles & Découvertes label, and a house listed in the Gault & Millau guide.

Sermiers Premier Cru: a marine subsoil 45 million years old

What truly sets Sermiers apart is its subsoil. A few metres beneath the vines, marls, clays and siliceous sands of marine origin, inherited from the Tertiary era (Lutetian, around 45 million years ago), clearly distinguish this terroir from Champagne's classic chalk. It is in these sands and clays that the estate's Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay draw their minerality and texture.

Beneath this layer, Champagne's sedimentary bedrock formed far earlier: marine deposits begun nearly 100 million years ago, pushed to the surface by the collapse of the Paris Basin 70 million years ago. As for the Lutetian fossils (45 million years), including giant cerithium shells described as early as the 17th century (Bibliothèque nationale de France), they were found at the Cosson farm, at the very heart of today's plots.

As for climate, Sermiers sits in a far-northern position typical of the Montagne de Reims: cold, continental winters, oceanic humidity year-round, and sometimes fierce frosts. Demanding conditions that slow ripening and concentrate aromas, a precious slowness that largely explains the finesse of the Lacuisse Champagnes.

Two collections, eight cuvées: from Classique to Premium Nature

The Lacuisse range splits into two families: the Classique Collection, accessible and representative of the house, and the Premium Nature Collection, whose cuvées receive no sulfur added at disgorgement and are made Brut Nature (no dosage), a demanding approach that lays the terroir bare.

Frequently asked questions about Champagne Lacuisse and the Premier Cru of Sermiers

Where is Champagne Lacuisse, and what is the Premier Cru of Sermiers ?

Champagne Lacuisse Frères is based in Sermiers, in the Marne (51500), at the heart of the Montagne de Reims. Sermiers is classified Premier Cru (90% on the Champagne cru scale), the level just below Grand Cru. The estate's 17 hectares are all Premier Cru, on a singular subsoil of marls, clays and siliceous sands.

What is the Premium Nature Collection ?

It is the house's most natural range: no sulfur added at disgorgement, and a Brut Nature style, meaning no dosage (no added sugar). The wine is shown as close as possible to its natural expression, highlighting the minerality of the Sermiers terroir. A demanding approach that requires perfectly ripe, healthy grapes.

Why does Pinot Meunier make up 70% of the vineyard ?

Pinot Meunier is the emblematic grape of the Montagne de Reims: it thrives on the clay and siliceous soils of Sermiers and resists late frosts better than Chardonnay. It brings roundness, fruit (apple, brioche, citrus) and accessibility in youth. At Lacuisse it is the heart of the blend, completed by Pinot Noir (structure) and Chardonnay (finesse).

What makes the Sermiers terroir unique ?

Its subsoil of marls, clays and siliceous sands, which sets it apart from Champagne's more typical chalk. These sediments, around 90 to 100 million years old at their base, were once a seabed; the distinctive siliceous sands date from the Tertiary (Lutetian, ~45 million years). Lutetian fossils were found at the Cosson farm, at the heart of the estate. This terroir gives the wines a specific minerality and texture.

What food pairs with the Lacuisse Champagnes ?

The Tradition is perfect as an aperitif (gougeres, salmon toasts). The Grande Réserve and the Blanc de Noirs Minéral pair with fine fish, shellfish and white meats. The Rosé goes with red-fruit desserts and festive dishes. The vintages (Cosson 2014, Vintage Minéral 2016) and the Sensation Minérale shine with gastronomic plates: langoustines, Bresse poultry, quail, mature cheeses.

How long can the Lacuisse Champagnes be kept ?

All cuvées are already aged at least 4 years in the cellar before release. After that, the non-vintage cuvées (Tradition, Grande Réserve, Rosé) keep 3 to 5 years from purchase, at 12-14 °C and away from light. The Brut Nature cuvées, more sensitive to oxidation, are best within 2 to 3 years. The vintages (Cosson 2014, Vintage Minéral 2016) take longer ageing and gain in complexity.

Is the estate committed to environmental practices ?

Yes, with three recognitions: High Environmental Value (HVE), Sustainable Viticulture in Champagne (VDC) and the Vignobles & Découvertes label. In the vineyard, the house uses cover crops and mating disruption against the grape moth, with no insecticide, to protect soils, water and biodiversity.

Which Lacuisse cuvée should I choose to give or to discover ?

For a first discovery: the Tradition, round and accessible. For a memorable gift: the Cosson 2014, a vintage prestige cuvée named after the historic farm. For lovers of undosed Champagnes: the Sensation Minérale (Brut Nature, several times medalled) or the Blanc de Noirs Minéral.
