Champagne Jeeper, the champagne of Chardonnay and oak since 1949

Champagne Jeeper - AOC Champagne (Montagne de Reims, Côte des Blancs, Vallée de la Marne)

Champagne Jeeper is a family Champagne house founded in 1949 at Faverolles-et-Coëmy, near Reims. Across some fifty hectares spread over the Montagne de Reims, the Côte des Blancs and the Vallée de la Marne, it crafts champagnes led by Chardonnay, matured in Burgundian oak barrels. Certified Sustainable Viticulture in Champagne and High Environmental Value, it signs cuvees such as the Grand Assemblage Premier Cru, the Grande Réserve Blanc de Blancs and the Grand Rosé, available direct on Avenue des Vins.

In 1949, a Champagne grower drove his hillsides at the wheel of a Willys Jeep left behind by the American army. They called him the "Jeeper Man"; he made it the name of his champagne. More than seventy years on, Champagne Jeeper keeps the same spirit alive: Chardonnay at the heart of the blends, oak ageing as a signature, and the freedom to imagine Champagne differently. Available direct on Avenue des Vins.

From the Willys Jeep to Champagne Jeeper

Champagne Jeeper's story belongs to a family winegrowing tradition going back to the 18th century, at Faverolles-et-Coëmy, in the heart of Champagne. In the aftermath of the Second World War, Armand Goutorbe revived the family estate and rode through his plots at the wheel of a Willys Jeep, given by the American army in recognition of his commitment to the Resistance. This unusual vehicle on the Champagne hillsides earned him the nickname "Jeeper Man".

In 1949, he chose that name, "Jeeper", for his champagne, asserting from the outset a will to stand apart from Champagne conventions. To this day, that story embodies the house's spirit: a deep attachment to its roots, together with the freedom to imagine champagne differently. A neo-artisan house, bold and curious.

Chardonnay and oak, the Jeeper signature

Chardonnay sits at the heart of the Jeeper identity: it brings freshness, finesse and elegance. In the cellar, the house pairs the precision of stainless-steel vats with ageing in Burgundian oak barrels. Used with restraint, the wood develops complexity and enriches the texture of the wines, while preserving their freshness.

Fifty hectares on Champagne's finest terroirs

Champagne Jeeper farms around fifty hectares across some of the finest plots of Champagne: the Montagne de Reims, the Côte des Blancs and the Vallée de la Marne. This diversity of terroir, on limestone soils, lets the house work the region's three emblematic grapes, chardonnay, pinot noir and meunier, and compose blends of great precision.

Chardonnay takes the leading role: present in every cuvee, it brings the freshness, finesse and elegance that define the Jeeper identity, while pinot noir and meunier enrich the blends with their structure and aromatic expression.

Sustainable viticulture and High Environmental Value

Convinced that the quality of a champagne begins in the vineyard, the house works with care for the environment. Champagne Jeeper has been certified Sustainable Viticulture in Champagne and High Environmental Value since 2016, favouring natural grass cover and practices that respect biodiversity, a daily attention to the soils, the vines and the handing-on of Champagne's terroirs.

Burgundian oak barrels and long ageing

In the cellar, the house pairs the modernity of stainless-steel vats with the tradition of Burgundian oak barrels. With nearly 1,200 barrels, its cellar is one of the largest in Champagne, and the work of the wood is a true oenological signature: used with restraint, it follows the evolution of the wines and develops their complexity without masking the fruit. The careful selection of the grapes and the use of first-press juice only complete this search for balance.

Ageing is another pillar of the Jeeper style: the cuvees rest on laths for several years before release, and some 3.5 million bottles wait patiently in the house's cellars.

A bottle designed for champagne

The Jeeper bottle, specially designed for the house, is not only about looks: its shorter neck limits oxygen intake (and therefore the need for sulphites), while its wider format favours better keeping and more complexity during ageing on the lees.

Cuvees praised by the international critics

Jeeper champagnes are regularly singled out by the specialist press. The Grande Réserve Blanc de Blancs has been scored around 92-93/100 by Wine Spectator, Gilbert & Gaillard and the IWSC, and medalled at Decanter and the International Wine Challenge; the Grand Rosé has been praised around 91-92/100 (Wine Spectator, Gilbert & Gaillard). Scores and medals vary by tasting and release; find the distinctions of the cuvees offered on the estate's page.
