Edouard Duval, a wine entrepreneur with an international reach

Coming from the sixth generation of a Champagne family, Edouard Duval engaged very early in the world of wine. A graduate of the prestigious MSc in Wine Management of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), he first developed an international career by co-founding East Meets West Fine Wines, one of the largest importers of fine wines in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao.

The company, today present in more than 170 cities, was voted Best wine importer in China thirteen consecutive years by Wine 100. In parallel, Edouard Duval is also co-owner of Domaine Roux-Duval in Chassagne-Montrachet in Burgundy, where he produces a limited number of bottles of Premier Cru Abbaye de Morgeot.

In 2015, he decided to return to his family lands in Champagne to create Champagne Edouard Duval, with the ambition of revealing all the singularity of the Cote des Bar terroir.

Bligny and the Cote des Bar: a singular Champagne terroir

The estate is located in the village of Bligny, at the heart of the Barrois vineyard, in the department of the Aube. This southern part of Champagne stands out for its particular geology: the soils are mostly Kimmeridgian, composed of a mix of limestones and marls. These geological formations, also present in Chablis, bring to the wines:

A marked minerality and a dense structure, signatures of the Kimmeridgian soils.

A great aromatic precision, on well-exposed limestone slopes.

This terroir gives the estate's champagnes a singular identity, marked by notes of smoky limestone, a mineral tension and a fine aromatic depth.

The Domaine Sainte Eulalie: a historic Champagne monopole

The Domaine Sainte Eulalie has its origins in the 11th century, when the monks of the Abbey of Cluny founded a priory there in 1095. Over the centuries, the property passed under the authority of the Abbey of Clairvaux before becoming a major agricultural and wine estate of the region.

In the 1950s, Charles Roger Duval, Edouard's grandfather, acquired the property with two other Champagne families before becoming its sole owner in the 1970s. Today, the estate is one of the rare 28-hectare contiguous wine monopoles in Champagne.

The vines are planted between 210 and 320 metres of altitude, making the Sainte Eulalie lieu-dit one of the highest points of the Champagne vineyard. This topography offers excellent sunshine, a natural regulation of water in the soils and a gradual ripening of the grapes. The vineyard is surrounded by forests, meadows and streams, contributing to the ecological balance of the estate.

A sustainable and regenerative viticulture

The running of the vineyard is based on an approach respectful of the environment and biodiversity. The estate is certified HVE level 3 (High Environmental Value) and VDC (Sustainable Viticulture in Champagne). No herbicide is used and many plots are cultivated by massal selection with vines over 50 years old.

An in-depth pedological study was also carried out to precisely map the Kimmeridgian strata of the vineyard and adapt the viticulture to each plot. The estate is moreover fully energy self-sufficient, thanks to an installation of solar panels covering all the electrical needs of the property.

A single-plot approach to craft great champagnes

The Edouard Duval champagnes are made exclusively from grapes grown on the Sainte Eulalie Monopole. The vineyard is divided into 23 plots, planted mostly with Pinot Noir (80%) and Chardonnay (20%).

The winemaking is carried out directly at the estate, in a modern pressing centre and a precision vat room. Some wines are aged partially in oak barrels, demi-muids or foudres, without new oak, to bring complexity while respecting the purity of the fruit. The champagnes then benefit from a long ageing on the lees with a very low dosage, giving birth to cuvees that are mostly Extra Brut or Brut Nature.
