Champagne Charles Clément: The cooperative soul of the Côte des Bar

In the southern part of Champagne, on the sunlit hillsides of the Côte des Bar, Champagne Charles Clément embodies a collective, committed and deeply human vision of wine. Here, it is not a handful of isolated hectares, but 60 winegrowers united who cultivate 120 hectares of vineyards together, sharing the same standards of quality and a sincere attachment to their terroir.

This cooperative adventure gives rise to authentic, expressive and approachable Champagnes, true to the identity of the Aube: fruit-driven, fresh, and above all marked by a strong Pinot Noir signature, the flagship grape variety of the house.

A story of solidarity born in 1956

The story begins on September 29, 1956, when 22 visionary winegrowers decided to pool their resources and expertise. At the time, the cooperative counted just 18 hectares and a single press. Very quickly, the collective momentum attracted other growers from nearby villages such as Rouvres-les-Vignes and Lignol-le-Château.

As the vineyard and facilities gradually expanded, the cooperative reached a key milestone in 1972 with the release of its first bottles. Since then, the house has continued to evolve, without ever losing its farming roots or its strong spirit of mutual support.

Based in Colombé-le-Sec, near Bar-sur-Aube and Colombey-les-Deux-Églises, the winery is anchored in a village rich in history. Its name, derived from Colombarium, recalls ancient dovecotes and the limestone plateau that still shapes the character of the wines today.

A 120-hectare vineyard at the heart of the Côte des Bar

Spread across several villages, the vineyard offers a true mosaic of soils and exposures, ideal for blending. The vines are planted with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, allowing the full diversity of the Côte des Bar to be expressed.

This parcel diversity produces balanced Champagnes, where the natural freshness of the terroir meets ripe, generous fruit. Pinot Noir, omnipresent, brings structure, depth and indulgence, forming the backbone of the Charles Clément style.

Between Champagne tradition and controlled modernity

From vineyard to bottling, the house follows a clear guideline: preserve Champagne traditions while integrating modern techniques to improve precision and consistency.

Every viticultural decision is guided by respect for the land. The growers know that well-tended vines are the foundation of great Champagne. Beyond environmental certifications, there is above all a deep, inherited relationship with the terroir, passed down through generations.

The cooperative model, often underestimated, becomes a real strength here. It enables shared expertise, knowledge transmission and rare collective resilience in a demanding agricultural environment.
