Portraits of winemakers
Domaine de Pratavone: A Winemaker’s Corsican Passion Between Two Islands
Domaine de Pratavone tells a story of vines, heritage, and deep attachment to the land. Between childhood memories, love for the Corsican terroir, and the desire to craft sincere wines, this portrait highlights a winemaker for whom wine has never simply been a profession.
Where does the story of Domaine de Pratavone come from?
Some life paths seem to have been laid out long in advance. The journey of the winemaker at Domaine de Pratavone is one of them.
Before Corsica, there was Algeria, where her father owned a small vineyard. From a very young age, she grew up in this world, surrounded by vines, farming practices, and a wine culture that was already deeply rooted in family life. Then came Corsica another land, another light but ultimately the same certainty: the vine.
“I grew up surrounded by vines. First in Algeria, where my father had a small vineyard, then in Corsica. Wine has always been part of my life, and it was only natural for me to follow this path.”
Today, Domaine de Pratavone carries this singular story. A story of transmission, loyalty to the land, and a passion built over time.
What is the estate’s philosophy?
At Domaine de Pratavone, wine is first and foremost built on respect: respect for the vine, the terroir, the grape, and work done well.
Here, every stage matters. From pruning to harvest, then from the cellar to ageing, nothing is left to chance. Over time, the estate has evolved technically, particularly through the modernization of the cellar, with the arrival of equipment that has made it possible to go even further in precision.
“Every gesture matters in bringing out the best in our grapes.”
“It was a turning point, one that allowed us to express the quality of our wines even better while staying true to our philosophy.”
There is a real sense of consistency here: modernizing without losing authenticity, progressing without losing the soul of the estate.
Which wine best represents Domaine de Pratavone?
If one bottle had to be chosen to tell the story of the estate, it would without hesitation be Guillaume de Pratavone Rouge, made from Sciaccarellu, the emblematic grape variety of the AOC Ajaccio appellation.
This wine perfectly reflects the spirit of the estate: a strong Corsican identity, finesse, character, and genuine elegance in its expression.
“Remarkable for its finesse and aromas, it is also known as the ‘wild Pinot Noir.’”
It is a beautiful expression, because it says a great deal in just a few words. There is something delicate, refined, but also free and slightly untamed in this grape variety. It is a wine that speaks of its island without overdoing it.
“It is a wine for sharing, one that accompanies a warm moment with friends or family.”
To showcase it, the winemaker gladly imagines it alongside a rib of beef grilled over a wood fire, scented with herbs from the maquis. A simple and generous pairing, much like the estate itself.
What drives her every day?
What inspires the winemaker daily is, first and foremost, her connection to the vine. Watching the plant evolve, following the seasons, and guiding the transformation from grape to wine all give meaning to her work.
But behind this motivation lies something even deeper: the desire to pass things on. To pass on expertise, high standards, a way of working, but also an attachment to the land and to doing things the right way.
Domaine de Pratavone is not only conceived in the present. It is part of a continuing story.
What future does she imagine for the estate?
Her strongest ambition is clear: to see the story continue.
Her youngest son, who is currently studying biology with a focus on oenology, could represent the next generation of the estate. This prospect gives a special strength to all the work being done today.
“My greatest ambition is to pass the estate on to my youngest son. I dream of seeing the next generation continue this adventure with the same love for work done well.”
That sentence says it all: family, the long term, high standards, and the desire to build something lasting.
One word to sum up Domaine de Pratavone?
If only one word had to remain, it would undoubtedly be passion.
Not a surface-level passion. A deep, rooted, patient passion. The kind that follows the seasons, the choices, the doubts, the progress, and gives birth to wines that reflect the people who make them.
Domaine de Pratavone tells a story far greater than that of a Corsican vineyard. It tells a story of life, transmission, and attachment to a unique land.
