Portraits of winemakers
Château Saint-Roux, in the heart of nature
Château Saint-Roux is a wine estate covering nearly 40 hectares in the Var region, right in the heart of Provence. The cicadas have been singing on the property since the 15th century, the date of construction of the château's historic farm. This building, located in the heart of the Maures plain, was renovated over a period of 2 years to become the current estate, where all the vines are cultivated organically. In addition to its vineyard, Château Saint-Roux develops other activities, including an organic vegetable garden, goat farming, and accommodation.
Available directly from the estate on Avenue des Vins.
What is the history behind the estate?
A historic farm
The château owes its name to the color of its soil. The estate benefits from a privileged terroir characterized by orangish-red earth that is highly favorable for vine cultivation. Thanks to this terroir, the grapes develop a beautiful aromatic palette and a complexity highly appreciated by consumers.
How does the estate approach sustainability?
An eco-responsible approach
Château Saint-Roux is committed to a comprehensive eco-responsible approach with all 40 hectares of its vineyards cultivated organically. The wines are also vinified with natural yeasts from the estate to impart a unique character to the wine. Consistent with this qualitative approach, the grapes are hand-harvested to preserve the best bunches.
On the estate, there is also a 3,800 m² organic vegetable garden. The owners have also installed beehives to promote biodiversity and orchard pollination. A bread oven, a restaurant, and a farm with animals complete this paradise where nature lovers come to rejuvenate. The château also produces organic goat cheese from the milk of the estate's 50 goats. With cheeses and fruits and vegetables from the garden supplying the restaurant, it’s a truly (very) short supply chain!
What makes the wines distinctive?
Charming and unusual wines
Château Saint-Roux benefits from a distinctive soil typicity that allows it to produce rich wines that perfectly reflect their exceptional terroir. The estate produces cuvées in AOP Côtes de Provence with the Le Pigeonnier and Château Saint-Roux ranges, as well as lighter wines in IGP Maures with the Friponne range. From enjoyable everyday wines to grand terroir wines, there is something for every taste!
The estate also stands out by cultivating more unusual grape varieties in the region such as Viognier, Merlot, Nielluccio, Colombard, and Marcello. To address climate change, Château Saint-Roux is studying and analyzing the evolution of several grape varieties more resistant to heat, such as Touriga Nacional, Calabrese, and Mouvèdre gris and blanc.
Why buy directly from the winemaker? The wines of Château Saint-Roux are shipped straight from the estate: estate price with no middleman, full vintage traceability, and your support for an independent winegrowing family.
Discover the wines of Château Saint-Roux directly from the estate, at the estate price, in a short supply chain on Avenue des Vins.
Frequently asked questions about Château Saint-Roux
Where does the name Château Saint-Roux come from?
The estate takes its name from the color of its soil, which carries an orange-red tint. This particular ground supports the ripening of the grapes and shapes the aromatic signature found in the wines.
Is Château Saint-Roux an organic wine estate?
Yes, all 40 hectares of vines are farmed organically. Grapes are hand-picked and fermentation relies on the estate's own indigenous yeasts, a method that highlights the character of this Var terroir.
What appellations does Château Saint-Roux produce?
The estate works on two levels: structured wines under the Côtes de Provence appellation, released as the Le Pigeonnier and Château Saint-Roux ranges, and an easy-drinking cuvée called Friponne, labeled IGP Maures.
What grape varieties grow at Château Saint-Roux?
The vineyard grows varieties rarely seen in Provence, including Viognier, Merlot, Nielluccio, Colombard, and Marcello. The estate is also trialing heat-tolerant varieties, such as Touriga Nacional, to prepare the vineyard for a warmer climate.
What else can you find at Château Saint-Roux besides wine?
Beyond its vines, the estate also runs an organic vegetable garden, beehives, a farm with animals, and a dining spot. Goats, a bread oven, and on-site accommodation round out a place built as much around nature as around winemaking.
