Description and Origins of Grolleau

Originating from the Loire Valley, Grolleau derives its name from the old French word grolle, meaning "horn," in reference to the shape of its vine leaves. Cultivated for centuries, this grape was once prized for its productivity and resistance to diseases. Although it was sidelined in favor of other varieties, Grolleau is now enjoying renewed interest for crafting rosé, red, and sparkling wines. Grolleau primarily exists as Grolleau Noir, though variants like Grolleau Gris also exist.

Key Terroirs Where Grolleau is Cultivated

Grolleau thrives primarily in the Loire Valley, where it benefits from a temperate climate and diverse soils. It is notably present in the following appellations:

Serving Grolleau at the right temperature

Because Grolleau is built on freshness, serving temperature makes all the difference. Its rosé wines are at their best served well chilled, between 8 and 10 °C, which keeps their red-fruit aromas and crisp acidity lively. The lighter red wines call for a slightly warmer glass, around 12 to 14 °C, cool enough to preserve their fruit and their easy, approachable style.

Whatever the color, these are wines to enjoy young, while their strawberry and raspberry fruit and vibrant freshness are at their peak, rather than bottles to lay down for long cellaring.

Grolleau, the heart of Rosé d’Anjou

If Grolleau has a signature wine, it is Rosé d’Anjou: this Loire Valley grape is the mainstay of the appellation, where it gives the gently fruity, easy-drinking pink wine the region is known for. Its naturally light color and fresh red-fruit character are exactly what this style of rosé calls for.

Beyond Anjou, Grolleau travels across the Loire, from Touraine to the wider Val de Loire, turning up in light reds and in sparkling cuvées as well as rosés. Everywhere it keeps the same friendly, thirst-quenching profile that makes it such an approachable introduction to Loire wines.
