Covering more than 65,000 hectares of vines, the Rhône Valley is France's second-largest AOC vineyard and covers 6 départements between Vienne and Avignon. The Beaumes-de-Venise AOC covers four communes to the north of Avignon (Beaumes-de-Venise, Lafare, La Roque-Alric and Suzette), on some 560 hectares of mainly clay and sandy soil. Grenache vines, among others, are planted in this appellation in the Mediterranean climate of this geographical area, producing red wines that can be kept for up to 5 years before drinking. These wines are structured by tannins, ample and express marked aromas of ripe fruit, red fruit, spices and aromatic herbs.

Beaumes-de-Venise, Grenache and Syrah of the Dentelles

Beaumes-de-Venise ranks among the crus of the Côtes du Rhône, and it is a red-only cru: the appellation covers dry red wine alone. Its wines are blends in which Grenache and Syrah are both present and in the majority, with Mourvèdre, Cinsault or other Rhône grapes allowed alongside them.

Restanques and Hand Harvesting

Along the flanks of the Dentelles de Montmirail, growers built narrow terraces into the hillside, known locally as "restanques" or "faysses." They follow the contour lines so the soil soaks up rainwater better, and keeping them up means keeping erosion in check.

Throughout the appellation, grapes are picked by hand and sorted, either in the vineyard or on a sorting table. The bins that carry them to the winery hold no more than 3,000 kilograms (about 6,600 pounds), to protect the fruit's aromas. Keeping the hand harvest alive also helps preserve the terraced vineyards.

The soil gets the same care. The appellation bans chemical weeding, both across the whole plot and between the rows, as well as plastic mulch. The headlands at the ends of the rows keep their natural grass cover. Yields are set at 38 hectoliters per hectare (roughly 406 US gallons per acre).

History of the AOC Beaumes-de-Venise Appellation

Nestled in the heart of the Dentelles de Montmirail in Vaucluse, the Beaumes-de-Venise appellation is part of the rich viticultural history of the Rhône Valley, with roots dating back to Roman times. While it's an integral part of the Côtes du Rhône, it gained AOC recognition in 2005, although its naturally sweet wines (AOC Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise) have been renowned for centuries.

Climate and Terroir of the AOC Beaumes-de-Venise Appellation

  • Climate: The region benefits from a Mediterranean climate typical of the southern Rhône Valley, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild winters. The beneficial influence of the mistral wind also provides natural protection against vine diseases.
  • Soils: The AOC Beaumes-de-Venise appellation extends over limestone and clay terroirs, interspersed with marl and rocky outcrops, contributing to the complexity of the produced red wines.

Grenache and Syrah: Emblematic Grape Varieties of the AOC Beaumes-de-Venise

  • Grenache Noir: The quintessential Mediterranean grape variety, Grenache is essential in the Rhône Valley. In the AOC Beaumes-de-Venise, Grenache must represent a minimum of 50% of the plantings, providing generous notes of black fruits and a beautiful roundness.
  • Syrah: Syrah must represent a minimum of 20% of the plantings, imparting power and freshness to the red wines of AOC Beaumes-de-Venise.

Style of AOC Beaumes-de-Venise Wine

  • Appearance: Deep red color, ranging from ruby to garnet.
  • Nose: The bouquet is expressive, combining aromas of black fruits (blueberry, blackberry) and spices (pepper, licorice), sometimes underscored by hints of garrigue and leather after a few years of aging.
  • Palate: Structured and generous, the palate reveals beautiful concentration and controlled power. The tannins are present but silky, and the persistent finish often evokes indulgent notes of cocoa and sweet spices.

Serving Temperature:

  • 16°-18°C

Aging Potential:

  • Beaumes-de-Venise reds can be enjoyed when young, but depending on the estate and vintage, they can gain complexity after 5 to 8 years of aging.

Red Beaumes-de-Venise is a dry wine built around Grenache and Syrah, recognized as an AOC in 2005. Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise, an AOC since 1945, is a vin doux naturel, a fortified sweet wine from Muscat à Petits Grains, made in Beaumes-de-Venise and Aubignan in white, rosé or red.
