Description and Origins of Floréal

Floréal is a hybrid grape variety developed by INRA (France’s National Institute for Agricultural Research) in the 2000s. It is the result of a cross between disease-resistant varieties (Bouquet and Villaris) and was specifically bred to combat powdery mildew and downy mildew while reducing the need for chemical treatments. Appreciated for its consistent yields, Floréal produces dry white wines with fruity and floral aromatic profiles. Designed for sustainable viticulture, Floréal represents a modern solution to today’s environmental challenges.

Primary Terroirs Where Floréal is Cultivated

Floréal is primarily grown in the Southwest and Loire Valley regions of France, where it thrives in oceanic and temperate climates. It can be found in appellations such as IGP Côtes de Gascogne and IGP Val de Loire, often vinified as a single-varietal wine to showcase its freshness and aromatic potential. Its natural resistance has made Floréal a favorite among winemakers committed to organic and sustainable viticulture practices, resulting in authentic and environmentally friendly wines.

How to Serve Floréal

Like most fresh, aromatic white wines, Floréal shows best when served well chilled, between 8 and 10 °C. This range keeps its citrus and white-flower aromas bright while preserving the crisp acidity that defines the style. Drink it young, while its fruit is at its most vibrant, and pour it as an aperitif or with the light dishes it pairs with so naturally. To compare styles, browse our full selection of white wines.

Floréal and Disease-Resistant Grape Varieties

Floréal belongs to a new generation of disease-resistant grapes, often called PIWI varieties, from the German pilzwiderstandsfähig, meaning fungus-resistant. Bred in France for sustainable viticulture, these vines withstand the main fungal diseases of the vine, so growers can treat the vineyard far less often and work more easily in organic farming. Floréal is grown mainly in the Loire Valley and the South-West of France, and you can explore comparable bottles among our Loire wines and South-West wines.
