Wine Cellar of the Month for November : Chablis 1er Cru, grower Champagnes & award-winning wines direct from the winemaker
November, the month when depth returns to the glass
As the days shorten and the cold sets in, the wines we reach for naturally gain in density. November is the month of roasted poultry, fish in cream sauce, aged cheeses brought out alongside a bottle with real backbone. It is also the month that precedes the festive season, when thoughts turn to wines that will make an impression on a great table.
For this November cave du mois, our selection team focused on precision and the distinction of appellations. A Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu, one of the most recognised terroirs of the appellation, on Kimmeridgian soils that lend Chardonnay a remarkable iodine-laced minerality and tension. Independent grower Champagnes whose personality stands apart from the grandes maisons. An Alsace Vieilles Vignes Pinot Gris with a broad texture and aromas of candied fruit and warm spices. And reds from the South-West and Beaujolais, fruity and supple, for everyday autumn dinners.
Award-winning wines, selected direct from the winemaker
What sets the November cave du mois apart is the density of its accolades. Several cuvées in this selection have been recognised by the Guide Hachette des Vins, the Concours Général Agricole de Paris, Gilbert & Gaillard and Gault & Millau, independent references that validate the objective quality of a wine, beyond subjective tasting alone.
On Avenue des Vins, these award-winning cuvées are available through direct producer sales: the winemaker ships the bottles personally, without any middleman, at the estate's own price. It is one of the rare ways to access appellations such as Chablis 1er Cru or Anjou Villages at prices that reflect the true cost of production, without a négociant's margin. FAQ: Cave du mois de novembre
What is a Chablis 1er Cru and how does it differ from a village Chablis ?
Chablis 1er Cru comes from classified parcels in the appellation hierarchy, located on hillsides with particularly favourable exposures and soils, predominantly Kimmeridgian marls rich in oyster fossils. Compared to a village Chablis, the 1er Cru offers greater aromatic complexity, more assertive minerality and a superior ageing potential. There are 40 classified 1er Cru lieux-dits in Chablis, including Mont de Milieu, one of the most reputed.
What is Alsace Pinot Gris and why choose a Vieilles Vignes cuvée ?
Pinot Gris is one of Alsace's four noble grape varieties, alongside Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Muscat. It produces dry to sweet white wines with a golden robe, aromas of candied fruits, honey, smoke and warm spices. A Vieilles Vignes cuvée comes from vines at least thirty to forty years old, vines whose naturally lower yields concentrate aromas and texture more intensely into each bunch of grapes.
Why is November a good time to buy Champagne ?
November comes before the year-end festivities, it is the ideal moment to stock up on Champagne before December's price increases and stock shortages. By buying directly from an independent grower on Avenue des Vins, you gain access to characterful cuvées at more accessible prices than the grandes maisons, with the guarantee of a fresh, fully traceable vintage.
What food pairings work best for a November meal ?
November calls for comforting, generous pairings. A Champagne to open the evening alongside foie gras toasts or warm oysters. A Chablis 1er Cru with a sole meunière or a chicken in cream sauce. A South-West red or a Brouilly with a board of aged cheeses or braised meat. And Alsace Pinot Gris pairs superbly with an onion tart, choucroute garnie or a runny Munster cheese.
How should you read wine awards and medals on a bottle ?
The main reliable awards in France are: the Concours Général Agricole de Paris (gold, silver or bronze medal, awarded by blind tasting), the Guide Hachette des Vins (stars and coups de cœur), Gilbert & Gaillard (score out of 100) and Gault & Millau. These distinctions are awarded independently and provide an objective reference point for choosing a quality wine, without relying solely on the label or price.
