Our Wine-making Passion Originally from Schönberg in the Rhineland, our family fled the atrocities of the Napoleonic Wars and settled in Algeria for over a century. Included in the first edition of Féret des Vins d’Oranie in 1886, our family developed their vineyard, up until independence. Due to the 1962 nationalisation by the Algerian government, our family had to abandon the wine-growing estates that they had owned since 1859. Charles, our grand-father, joined his older brother, who was living in the Gironde region of France. He decided to purchase Château Haut Mondain, a 42-hectare AOC Bordeaux wine-growing estate, for the benefit of his two children and two nephews. Very quickly, the four partners found it necessary to develop and expand. Over 20 years, they purchased various vineyards, up until 1982 when they decided amicably to go their separate ways. The next step was to create our production company: SCEA Charles YUNG & Sons. Our father, Charles Yung, was able, during the split, to keep Châteaux Haut Mondain & Barail (AOC Bordeaux), Les Hauts de Palette & and the Moulin de Tassin (AOC Côtes de Bordeaux). He had to let Château Montrabech go, which had been the wine-growing estate that our mother had owned with her brothers, in AOC Corbières. In 1993, Jean Christophe purchased Château Saintongey (AOC Bordeaux) and settled there. Cécile, his wife, joined our company at that time. From 2001, Michel DARRIET allowed us to take on the lease of Château d’As (AOC Graves), along with Château Arnaud Jouan (AOC Côtes de Bordeaux). Rodolphe moved his business to the family property in 2006, although he had already been involved in company strategy since 1998. In 2012, we purchased Château Bourdon La Tour (AOC Côtes de Bordeaux) in Cadillac, which is currently undergoing complete renovation. Our story continues... Our father is still working for the company, and his current role has shifted to an advisory one. Today, Jean-Christophe manages the vineyards and wine-making, while Rodolphe, helped by Cécile, manages the sales and administration.
